David Gill has again dismissed the idea of Premiership clubs playing a 39th game. When Richard Scudamore unveiled the idea last February it attracted widespread criticism at all levels including club managers, chief executives and owners alike.

The motivation behind it is to promote the Premier League abroad by playing the proposed 39th game on foreign soil. We would actually benefit from it more than most clubs due to our popularity in all corners of the world, but Gill remains unconvinced that it would work, questioning the logic behind it all.

“It is highly unlikely,” he told Sky Sports.

.

“If you are talking about a 39th game how do you get the symmetry? If it was the 38th whose home game would it be? How do you decide where to play?

.“The domestic competition is the domestic competition. The Premier League is the Premier League in England.

.

“The Premier League should still look at opportunities and ideas but I cannot see an extra game happening. It would be a step too far.”

Friendlies

Following rumours that United have been asked to play a friendly with Liverpool in India, Gill admitted that friendly games in the middle of the season weren’t an impossibility and could even provide a timely break for the manager and his squad.

“Those games would naturally be more opportunistic in terms of how we are doing in any particular season,” he added.

.

“If, for any reason, there is a week or 10-day break in the fixture programme where Alex feels it would be beneficial to take a break, we would look at that.

.

“It would all be driven by the football side but we would not rule that out at all.”

Do you think a mid season friendly could be beneficial during a title challenge?
