9 free goals for United this season

posted on 06/02/10

9 goals for any club is a pretty chunky proportion of their total tally for a season, but Manchester United have managed to claim 9 free goals for themselves, of sorts, this season…so far.

Well…they’ve been scored for us by 9 different players. Nine own goals have gone our way this season with some being pretty vital for points.

Own Goals
Arsenal (H)
Sunderland (H)
Bolton (H)
Hull City (A)
Birmingham (A)
Arsenal (A)
Portsmouth x3 (H)

Total = 9

It’s unquestionable that you need a lot of luck on your way to winning a league title, but 7 own goals and some of the ones listed above were crucial to salvaging points from games.

What’s even more interesting is that ‘Own Goals’ is now our second highest scorer this season, ahead of Dimitar Berbatov and behind Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney 22
Own Goals 9
Dimitar Berbatov 8
Michael Owen 7
Antonio Valencia 7

  1. In fairness, the own goals weren’t just GIVEN to United. They were OG’s that were a result of United putting the defense in a tough situation. You don’t just “get” OG’s. You force them, to an extent. I would say, though, that probably 4 or 5 would have ended up United goals had the defenders not done it for them.

  2. Very much so Andy. Some would have had a united name on them had they not been put in by defenders, but at the end of the day, it’s scary to think that our second highest scorer is Own Goals. :P

Personally, see them as ‘freebies’ though. lol

  3. Can’t see them as freebies at all personally, bar maybe the inexplicable Diaby one. The rest all came from the result of pressure, great crosses etc – a good 5/6 would have been put in by a United player if the opposition hadn’t done it first, and the others were the result of fearing that happening.

Not convinced there were three yesterday either – if the Carrick one is an OG then about 10% of Frank Lampard’s goal tally should be chalked off and re-allocated as own goals!

After seeing the Carrick strike on MOTD last night, I agree ith you, but I’m going to go with official call and that’s an OG.
