Chel$ki 2 -- 2 Man Utd (4-1 on penalties)
An entertaining and eagerly-contested match was marred by another ridiculous refereeing decision.
Nani gave man utd an early lead on 10 minutes and Man Utd led at the break.
However, New Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti used the half-time break to maximum effect and his players responded by scoring shortly after the restart.
Ben Foster came off his line to punch a cross away, which Didier Drogba would have probably headed in. However, Foster didn’t get enough on the ball and it fell to Ricardo Carvalho who gleefully headed into an empty net.
Shortly after that referee Chris Foy managed to make another ridiculous decision, which has become a hallmark of the English football.
Having stopped the game earlier on when Michael Ballack fell awkwardly after a challenge by Patrice Evra, Chris Foy refused to stop the game after witnessing Michael Ballack body check Patrice Evra with his right elbow.
Now first of all, that is a red card offence, but secondly, having stopped the game for Chelsea just minutes earlier, it was unbeliavable that Foy didn’t return the favour for Man united benefit.
The united players were then guilty of not playing until the whistle and Didier Drogba fed Frank Lampard who put Chelsea ahead. Better defending and better goal-keeping might have prevented the second goal, but Chris Foy’s inability to see a red card offence smacks of corruption. Replays clearly showed that he saw the incident.
Thankfully, Wayne Rooney managed to score the equalizer, which sent the match into a penalty shootout.
