Undoubtedly, Dimitar Berbatov is one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation. With his exquisite first touch and control, he really has got all the ingredients to be essentially : A United Great. The languid Bulgarian has earned many comparisons to probably one of the most charismatic players in the history of the game: Eric Cantona.
But…are these comparisons of a valid nature, or are they just some fabrications invented by some of the many sensationalists present in today’s media. How many times do we hear players being dubbed the next Maradona, the next Cristiano Ronaldo etc. In all fairness, I recognise the burden some players are forced to carry on their back and Berbatov is certainly one of those players who has thus far, failed to live up to his ” King Eric ”, comparisons. So much so, that he has been constantly slated by numerous sections of the United faithful and certain quarters of the media. His apparent ”strops ”, while at Tottenham certainly forced many people to question, whether or not he had the ”United mentality”. Someone who is passionate and fights for everything and comes up with vital goals, when our backs are up against the wall. When he was first presented to the media, Fergie said that he believed Dimitar had what was required to follow in Eric’s footsteps. The ability to come up with vital goals against the big sides, to be loved by the United fans etc. But…up to this point, he has failed in each department.
A lot of people are trying to observe where Berbatov is going wrong at the moment. One massive fact which I find interesting is that, Dimitar Berbatov has only scored in back to back Premiership games once for United since arriving at the club. This sort of statistic accentuates the absolute inconsistency which he has shown since arriving at Old Trafford for that £30.75 million price tag. We have only seen flashes of the brilliance which Berbatov showed while at White Hart Lane. However, if he can perhaps hit a purple patch and bag a few goals before the end of the season, he COULD become an invaluable member of the team and blast us to success on all fronts and help us attain that quintuple, which we all crave….
So, let’s hope the Silky magician can provide us with a masterclass from now until the end of the season and we could all be indeed on a Berba-cloud 9.
