I would never do it, it is stupid and if you can't afford the games don't buy the console

Larger Hard drives can easily be installed on PS3 - A Linux has succesfully been installed on PS3 allowing users to make illegal copies of DVD & Blue Ray DVD movies ripped straight to Hard Drive and played without the disc. As yet there are 'ripped' game software titles for PS3 for download off torrent sites
