Dolphin Rescues Whales

Just seen a beautiful piece on Sky News about a friendly dolphin, that swims with holiday makers down under.

2 whales were stranded on the inlet and no prompting could turn them around. Then the resident dolphin came to the rescue.

He swam into shore and called them. They immediately relaxed and turned to follow him as he led them out of the inlet, through a tricky narrow channel in rocks and out into the open sea.

Who says these brilliant creatures are not only intelligent but possibly smarter than us????

A hero dophin has rescued two whales stranded on a beach in New Zealand. Moko, as witnesses have called him, led the two stranded pygmy sperm whales to safety after they became grounded. Vets were about to put the two mammals to sleep when Moko arrived on the scene. The sperm whales became stuck on Mahia beach, on the east coast of the country's North Island. Conservation Department officer Malcolm Smith said he tried for over an hour to get the whales, a 10ft mother and her calf, back into open water. "I've never heard of anything like this before, it was amazing," Mr Smith said."The whales made contact with the dolphin and she basically escorted them about 200 metres parallel with the beach to the edge of the sandbar.

"Then she did a right-angle turn through quite a narrow channel and escorted them out to sea. "There's been no sign of the whales since Monday, they haven't restranded." Moko is reportedly a famous bottlenosed-face around Mahia beach. The animal is said to interact with swimmers and approach boats and people on kayaks. Stranded whales that cannot be returned to the ocean generally have to be put down.
