"ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tiger Woods has been seriously injured in a car wreck in Florida, authorities said Friday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 2:25 a.m. ET. Woods was driving a 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle.

The police report narrative said the "driver had just pulled out of the driveway at his residence ... as [vehicle] began to drive on Deacon Circle, [vehicle] struck a fire hydrant. The front of [vehicle] then struck a tree..."

Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital. His condition was not immediately known, though the highway patrol news release said his injuries were serious.

The airbags in the car did not deploy, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel. The newspaper said that airbags typically do not deploy if a vehicle is traveling less than 33 miles per hour.

The highway patrol says the crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending. However, the highway patrol said the crash was not alcohol-related.

Woods is scheduled to play in the Chevron World Challenge beginning Dec. 3 in Thousand Oaks, Calif. He last played two weeks ago in Australia, where he won the Australian Masters.

He won six times this year after missing eight months recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Even though he failed to win a major, Woods said he considered this a successful year because he did not know how his knee would respond.

Woods, who has won 82 times around the world and 14 majors, returned to his $2.4 million home in the exclusive Isleworth subdivision near Orlando earlier this week after attending the Stanford-Cal football game, where he tossed the coin at the start of the game and was inducted into Stanford's sports Hall of Fame at halftime."

Ah, the news media are funny.

Now the reports are saying "not that serious"! Maybe some cuts on the face and he's already left hospital??

Tiger Woods drives Cadillac into tree

Tiger Woods was taken to hospital after crashing his car outside his home in the early hours of yesterday.

Woods, who this year became the first billion-dollar sportsman, hit a fire hydrant while pulling out of his driveway in the Orlando suburb of Isleworth. He then drove his black 2009 Cadillac Escalade into a neighbour’s tree. He was taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee with cuts on his face after police received an emergency call at 2.28am.

A Florida Highway Patrol accident report classified his injuries as serious, but the golfer’s office and hospital described the accident as minor and said he had been “admitted, treated and released in good condition”. Police say the crash was not alcohol-related. The incident is being investigated and unspecified charges are pending.

Police chief Daniel Saylor said that Woods’s wife, the supermodel Elin Nordegren, told how she used a golf club to smash the back window of the car and get her husband out. He said that officers found Woods lying in the street with his wife standing by him, and that the golfer was in and out of consciousness when they arrived. Woods had cuts on his lips and blood in his mouth, and officers gave him first aid until firefighters arrived ten minutes later.

Gary Bruhn, the mayor of the adjacent suburb of Windermere, said that he believed the crash was “nothing more than an accident”. He added that the police would carry out an investigation as part of the routine, and it would take a few days to complete.

he must have had a barney with his old lady .

she chases him out of house with golf club and caves the back window in ---he drives off in panic and hits hydrant ---she carries on after him till he hits tree ---then she panics and rings the babylon .

nobody will ever admit this of course and i could be entirely wrong .

but why is he driving out of his house at 2.30 am in such a state ---remember they say he was stone cold sober and no sign of narcotic abuse .

your uncle john is not a celebrity . if he had died in a crumpled mess it would barely have made a line in a local paper .

yet if jordan farts or becks has a haircut its front page news , tell uncle john he needs to get on the x factor before his next bump

I saw suddenly at 8.30 pm last night (UK time) that all the news services suddenly announced that Tiger Woods had been "seriously" hurt. Hence the original post. Big news, surely, that a major global star could have been hideously injured in car crash? Notice that 12 minutes later in the second post, after reading more websites, that the media very rapidly corrected itself. So I was amused by the culture of spreading disinformation. What was reported as "fact" across a number of sites (including the three I put links to) was then altered, and a day later, it's all a bit hazy as to why Tiger managed a slow speed crash outside his house, the night after Thanksgiving, right near his house. And if you believe different stories, his wife had to smash a window in the car, and / or Tiger was unconscious for six minutes, and / or he was / wasn't drunk, and / or there was a domestic ....... I doubt we'll get the true story on this one, but apparently Tiger is alive and well, if for some facial cuts and bruises.

Wow, Tiger is taking a serious beating in the media. It's funny reading about the car crash now, in the light of all the lurid affair headlines. Well, I say "funny".
