While Sir Alex’s men aim to lift a third European Cup in Moscow, the first United side to win the trophy will be honoured at a black-tie dinner held at Old Trafford.

All members of the 1968 squad will be in attendance on Thursday 29 May for a special event commemorating the Reds’ first European triumph, 40 years ago.

United beat Benfica 4-1 (after extra time) at Wembley Stadium to complete the painful rebuilding process necessitated by the Munich air disaster a decade earlier.

David Sadler, who scored three times on the road to the final, said he hopes the present-day trophy is back at Old Trafford for the dinner.

“It would be marvellous if Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys could [enjoy] success in Moscow," Sadler told the Manchester Evening News. "For the ‘68 boys it would be the icing on the cake.”

Irrespective of the result in Moscow, Sir Alex will be the guest of honour at the Old Trafford event, which will take place in the Manchester Suite. A host of other high-profile guests, including Billy Connolly, are expected to attend.

A similar dinner will also be held in Dublin on Saturday 31 May.
