Now I'm sure you all know how much I hate Rangers.
But last night has made me even more furious.
As usual, they have been a complete and utter disgrace.
They have spoiled the reputation of Scottish football fans, and have spoiled it for Manchester United fans, as Manchester City Council have revealed that there will be NO BIG SCREENS FOR NEXT WEEKS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL available to fans.
They are a disgrace, and I hope they lose the SPL Title and the Scottish Cup final for their troubles.

I'm surprised there were only 43 arrests after what I've been hearing this morning. Sectarian chanting, women being groped, Rangers fans dressed in Liverpool tops breaking into cars, young children in Man United shirts being shouted at, racist chants and attacks, police being beaten up and having stuff thrown at them, fighting amongst Rangers fans etc are some of the accusations I've heard.
Initial reports were that one of the screens went on the blink during the game but now I've heard it was switched off for health and safety reasons because there were over 20000 people there, which was 10000 more than expected. Can anyone confirm?

It is disgusting behaviour really. I was coming home on the train (I live in Glasgow) and a few of them were speaking of how harshly they were treated by the police. The reports i've read and heard of this morning (from unbiased fans) have stated quite the opposite.
They were told before the match that any sectarian or racist chanting would instantly have them arrested, why they did not adhere to this is a mystery.
I feel sorry for the Manchester United fans who wanted to watch the Champions League final on the large screens. Violence like that is intolerable in football, no matter what the conditions.

I agree.
Since you've just signed up, you won't have seen my rants about Rangers.
But I come from Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, and I hate Rangers.
I've seen their behaviour to a larger extent on SSN and I didn't realise how disgracful it was. I knew it was disgraceful, but its even WORSE than I thought.
Scotland have had big problems with behaviour and sectarianism in the past, and we have came out of that spell.
But its always Rangers who set us back. They are disgraceful and I really hope Celtic win the League and QOS the Scottish Cup.

I agree with these views also. As a neutral from Scotland, it seems that when the sectarianism started Celtic did their best to combat the problems, whereas Rangers didn't seem to do enough (further evidence can be seen from last night). Celtic fans abroad rarely cause trouble also.
It's a shame that Scotland is going to be named or blamed in these reports, when it is a minority of fans at fault.

I have to say that I've always held the Tartan Army in high regard. When Scotland are playing there is rarely any trouble and their support for the team is great.
After last night I still think that way. You can't tarnish the whole of Scotland just because some Rangers fans are scum.

This seems to be turning into an Anti Rangers slagging thread. Whether they deserve it or not, this is a manchester united forum and we had nothing at all to do with the filth being thrown about Manchester last night. If you are only here to slag off a team that should be banned from Europe - you won't live long.

Exactly, lets face it, every club has its share of rotten apples that spoil it for the rest of us genuine, loyal supporters - not just Rangers! My son supports Rangers :(, however, he is raging at those who did go off the rails last night.

There was trouble before that had even happened. Rangers fans had been drinking since the morning and there had been small pockets of trouble around Manchester throughout the day. The TV going off was unfortunate and was always likely to cause trouble but to attack the police, when it isn't their fault, is ludicrous and can not be justified. I really don't understand how you can watch a group of people trash your city and then defend them.

it failed about 10 mins before kick off ! sorry to manchester council for not having physic powers and sensing the breakdown!
stuff happens ! and even tho it did happen theres no reason to start throwing bottles about, last time bottles were thrown a 4 year old girl was hit in the head. you saying thats reasonable actions for a broken down screen ?
technology isnt fool-proof. it was out of order the way some fans acted last night. i had to race to town to pick up my gf who had the struggle of walking thru hordes of them. i must say on my way down there the majority of fans were impeccable. simply trying to get a taxi or make there way home.
again, its the small-minded few who think its ok to "riot" just because there in another city.

No excuse from the minority of the ranger's thugs(That's providing they were ranger's fans) was there any need to behave uncivilised, I drove up to piccadily garden's hour's before the kick off & seen plenty of thuggish behaviour prior to the failure of screening the match, Also why did they not listen when they were urged before hand not to travel to manchester without a ticket, They should of all stayed back in glasgow & watced the game on the big screen outside of there ground
All this now without a doubt will cause retaliation back in moscow next week & might jeopordise our world cup 2018 chances all thanks to the low lives who were involved

There was trouble all day. My brother in law is a copper working on a
tactical aid unit (riot police) and his unit had a very busy day indeed.
Not that many arrests were made during the day but that was only
because they didn't want to walk into the middle of 10,000 fans and
try to arrrest people. Would you?
He also told me the screen didn't malfunction, but a decision was made
to turn it off because of the sheer amount of people in Piccadilly Gardens
and people were being crushed. Officials were worried people could die
and decided to turn off the screen and try to disperse some of the people.
In the end, 10,000 walked to the velodrome to watch it there.
All this now without a doubt will cause retaliation back in moscow next week
Why? A Scottish man stabbed a Russian, why would they retaliate on the English?

You should have stayed at home in Stockport and watched it then.
Why would a Manchester United fan drive down to Manchester to
watch a football match on a screen between two different teams that he has no
connection with ?
I've highlighted some points for your benefit and you might like to try watching the news footage or some of the hundreds of YouTube videos that are already posted up.

THE breakdown of the big screen in Piccadilly has been blamed for sparking the violent scenes between the police and the Rangers fans.
The chaos which followed the failure has led the council to cancel plans to show next week's Champions League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea on big screens in the city centre.
While the "minority" responsible for the ugly clashes have been blasted for their behaviour, police say there was very little trouble until those who had gathered to watch the game on the big screen realised there was a problem.
Although fans quickly became frustrated when they realised the game had started and a screen saver image remained on display, about 11,000 followed instructions to head for a replacement screen at the velodrome, in East Manchester on council buses or on foot.
However trouble erupted after the 10,000 remaining began pouring out of the gardens, frantically trying to find somewhere to watch the game.
Pubs and bars nearby were already overflowing with fans and turned the increasingly furious crowds away.
Attacking
Violence followed after a minority of fans then started attacking police, who had formed a cordon across Oldham Street. Senior officers sent in riot squads to control the crowd and 15 officers were injured, at least one was left needing surgery overnight, and ambulance crews had to wait for escorts before answering calls in the city centre.
Despite the angry scenes health chiefs say there were very few serious injuries although emergency workers treated hundreds of walking wounded in one of their busiest ever nights.
City Council leader Sir Richard Leese said: "We had appalling scenes in Manchester last night, but we have to put that into context.
"The estimates vary between 100,000 and 200,000 Glasgow Rangers fans that we had in the city.
"Whatever that number, it's an unprecedented movement of people.
"It's the biggest movement of people for an event of this sort probably ever.
"Some 99.5 per cent of those behaved themselves and were a credit to their city.
"We did have a technical problem in the city but, even then, we had a contingency plan.
"We bussed people to that other screen."
"Small minority"
Coun Leese insisted that the "vast majority of fans" went to the velodrome screen and only a "very small minority" stayed in the city centre.
However, the MEN understands many fans didn't arrive at the velodrome until the end of the first half and the replacement screen was also hit by technical problems but council staff were able to sort these out.
At a press conference today, GMP assistant chief constable Justine Curran said the police's behaviour had been "necessary and proportionate".
Quizzed on whether her officers had over-reacted, she said: "I watched in [command] and saw officers chased up the street by a baying mob of 200 people.
"When trouble breaks out we have to respond.
"The vast majority of people who came experienced light touch policing."
Asked why they had not arranged a park or other open air venue for fans, ACC Curran said their research had showed people would not have been prepared to travel outside the city centre.
Weaken
Sir Richard said the trouble would not weaken Manchester's commitment to holding high-profile international events.
"Over the next 10 years we plan many more and we are not going to let the behaviour of a small number of people dissuade us from a strategy that is going to be of great benefit to the city."
He said he had no idea how long the clean-up operation was going to take, but said workmen had been working through the night.
"The fact we were able to arrange a replacement screen shows we were well prepared. We had buses arranged to take people to the replacement screen and they were able to watch the match.
"The problems were caused by a small minority of fans and those fans must take responsibility for their own behaviour."
Workmen called out to fix the problem are understood to have come under fire by fans throwing bottles, forcing them to abandon the job. It is understood they refused to return to the screen despite concerns that trouble would escalate.
A police source said: "There were some of the fans who acted like absolute animals that night, but there is no doubt that the failure of the screen was the catalyst for the trouble."
ACC Curran said: "We worked hard with our partners in Manchester to make this a celebration and make people feel safe in the city."
Nice atmosphere
She said she had walked the streets of Manchester earlier in the afternoon and had seen people having a good time in a nice atmosphere.
But she added: "I saw when the screen failed in Piccadilly Gardens, which was full with over 20,000 people in it, fans got very frustrated. Obviously some had been drinking a lot and they began to take it out on the screen and then on my officers who had worked incredibly hard to do the best they could. Obviously they have had to respond to the level of violence they were met with."
She said she had been "sickened" by the level of violence she had seen coming from the minority of fans who began causing trouble.
A police source said some officers who began working at 6am in the morning yesterday were still working long into the early hours.
Announcing his decision NOT to screen United's clash with Che;sea next week, Coun Leese said: "We are sorry to Manchester United fans but we are very clear," he said. "It would not be fair to residents and users of the city centre."
ACC Curran said: "I am sure the majority of Rangers fans will be as disappointed as we are that this event was marred by this unnecessary and unacceptable behaviour by a small number of fans.
"My officers acted professionally, swiftly and decisively to bring this trouble under control and I want to pay tribute to their actions.
"We have worked with the council and other agencies for a year to prepare for this major event, which was a great success until this minority of thugs spoiled the day for all true supporters."
2,000 calls
Ambulance bosses took 2,000 calls between 7pm and 7am.
They treated around 500 people overnight but had to withdraw from parts of the city centre at 8pm when the violence began and then worked with police escort.
A spokeswoman said: "Staff worked incredibly hard it was one of the busiest nights the Greater Manchester area has seen
"We worked with our partners and would like to praise all our staff who worked so hard."
Up to 150 people were treated at the Manchester Royal Infirmary overnight, most of them walking wounded or suffering the effects of too much alcohol.
Managers had organised extra beds and staff were on duty and coped well with demand. Only a handful of people were in a serious condition and needed admitting to the unit.
A spokeswoman said: "We were busier than usual but we were well prepared and able to cope with demand.
"Most of the injuries were minor and we treated people quickly without needing to admit them."
There were no problems at the other two fan zones in Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens. Police say until violence flared at Piccadilly there had been only eight arrests, they praised the rest of the fans for creating a carnival atmosphere.

i was there last night so i may aswell put in my 2p's worth.
we got there about 4ish and it was packed (as we expected.)
i was with my gf and was meeting up with my mum and dad (my dad had a ticket and we were watching it in a fanzone.) It has to be said it was abit rowdy (again as expected) some people shouting stuff at my gf (good looking female among footy fans, it will happen.)
we watched the game in albert sq.
At first they wouldn't let us in. I saw a camera man and said..."your here looking for trouble"...
he told me he'd much rather be let in the area to watch the game..so i asked why he was here ...his reply was "incase there is any trouble to film it..."
we were let in about 10 mins into the 1st half....
obviously i knew i was right when i first saw him...the media are looking for sensationalism is everything!
....after i watched the footage today i knew this was gunna be a big thing....
BUT myself saw no trouble at all....
the news have said between 110,000-200,000 people were there....so lets say 100-200 people travelled down looking for trouble....surely its playing into everyones hands giving them the attention??!
after the game we ended up around the arndale and the place was rocking.....
i agree with what people were saying about those thugs...i really do.but these people arent football supporters...they are hooligans.
lastly i heard about the picadilly screen going off and i expected trouble...those people travelled hundreds miles to watch the game and got nothing!i am not trying to make excuses because as ive said before its disgusting...BUT i can guarantee that most other teams fans wouldn't be happy either!
putting the violence aside (as i saw none of it on the night)....
We can learn abit from the Rangers fans. They are loyal, passionate and dedicated to the team they support. I would LOVE united supporters to be as passionate and support there team as Rangers did yesterday.
I had a great night.Im just hoping the atmosphere is better on wednesday in manchester....BUT being honest i doubt it.

Being upset about not being able to watch the football
does not give them the right to wreck our City. They
have every right to be angry at the failure of the big
screen, but is it really going to help if you throw glass
bottles full of beer at it? I seriously doubt it! Shop windows
were smashed, city centre residents were beaten indiscriminately
and cars were overturned. How can anybody defend this?
I went to work this morning and could not put my foot on the
floor without standing on broken glass and other crap. The whole
city stunk of stale beer and urine, I was holding my nose walking
down Market Street it was that bad. The Rangers fans (albeit a
minority) disgraced themseves and their Club. There can be no
excuses for behaviour like this ever!!!

I think we underestimate the number of their fans causing trouble.
It is definitely way more than 200 people causing trouble last night. I've heard stories of black couple going on the bus and getting racial abuse off rangers supporters. That may not be rioting, but that is still unacceptable behaviour. There's also been countless number of racist and sectarian songs sung, and i've even seen videos of fans wrecking cars and giving nazi salutes

But the second thing i will add in - was the police. Went far too OTT. Reports that there were about 200,000 people who were in manchester for the footie last night, and out of those, police said about 200 fans rioted in the tv fanzone with 42 arrests. Can i say, they aint fans of our club. If they were, they would treat each city with respect like 99% of the other teddy bears did.
42 people arrested out of 200,000 fans (11 charged)? Look at the Bradford riots, how many people took place and how many arrests there were.
but also, the whole of the riot police was a joke. As you know, us Scots, are always happy when it comes to football, win lose or draw, we are so obtimistic, we look ahead and not behind. And coming out of the stadium, all i heard was "oh well, treble it is" and looking ahead to the motherwell game on saturday.
I seen a few drunks, but happy drunks, singing and dancing, causing NOBODY any harm what so ever - and then all of a sudden, riot police came barging through the crouds and knocking peopole over, and THIS is what caused the main riot in the city (notice how the media leave that part out?)
I have to ask - over the past couple of years, why, when there is an old firm game be it at Ibrox or park head, why is there never any riots? I suspect it is due to the policing style.
Police (non riot) done a brilliant job, but the riot police stirred things up wading in with their size 10's thinking they are god
Anyway - i might be a true blue, loved my time in Manchester and was welcomed by the Mancunians when i was down there, and i felt good. We lost, but i dont care - not many times can i ever go to a major Euroupeian final with Rangers so it made my year i'd say.
Sorry once again to the mancs who were involved in the fighting - but this is not something we allow or tollorate at the club
Please dont brand or tar me with the same brush though as others, im not like those hooligans, im just a normal fan, who supports the team.
Now - lets go forward to next Wednesday when Utd face chelski - My prediction is tight game but 2 - 1 Tevez and Ronaldo - drogba for them.
Also, sorry for my spelling or puntuation, im dyslexic :o

teddybear you seem to be missing out the unacceptable behaviour of the majority of your fans. OK so 99% of them had no part in the riot, but the majority of them were drinking from the early hours of the morning, ****ing in the streets, littering everywhere.
Ask anyone who was in manchester city center today and they will tell you it looks like a tip and the lots of places reak of urine. This only difference the rioting has made is some shop windows smashed, and a couple of cars wrecked. Besides that Manchester would look like it does not because of the majority of fans and their disregard for the people of manchester.

Did you sign up here just to slag off Rangers fans? If so, you may as well
leave now. When you have more than 100,000 people gathered in one
place drinking, it's inevitable that mess will be created. The place looked
like a tip when I was going down market Street at about 8.45, but by
11.15 the majority of the mess was gone.

I have to say, i didnt see many bins about (maybe the mass of peopel covering them) but the council cleaners were out cleaning all the time
Its sad though, how its always the minority (say under 1000 fans out of 200,000 fans who went) who actually caused trouble, and sad to say but we shouldnt be thinkin bout that, look at the match, how the match was and congratulate Zenit for winning the UEFA cup!
We done tremendiously well to get to the final, but hey, we were runners up in a MAJOR euroupien final!
Congrats go to Zenit and Zenit fans tho :)

If you look at that video link above, i think it shows the very opposite of "heavy handed policing". I dont think Manchester or the police can be blamed

I've closed this thread now as imo it has run
it's course.
I can't see anything left to discuss.
I think both sides have had enough say
on the events in Manchester.
All i can see is that it's going to go round and round
in circles with the same old things being said.
Leaving it open will only inflame things in my
eyes. Resulting in members getting warnings/bans.

That has to be the most gormless and ill thought out post I have
ever seen to be perfectly honest ... no offence.
Because of Manchester City Council's actions it appears it's fine to
act like thugs, groping women, shouting at and scaring little
children, throwing bottles etc etc ... God give me strength !!!
Anyway thats not what I was here to say.
I just read this whole thread for the first time as I have been busy.
And I'm appalled to be honest !!!
All the rubbish written here says it all really !!!
Let's blame Rangers !! No, blame Celtic ... wait there it's all got
nothing to do with Scotland and all that nonsense ...
Not one single word, not one..........about the policemen who were
kicked and punched..... nothing about the women and children
terrified by the behaviour of these things from Rangers !!!
Yes ... poor old Rangers, poor old Scotland ... pathetic ...
let's keep our priorities right in future !!
