I wouldn't be one to watch chess now, but give the guys who play well
some credit ffs. You need to have a powerful brain to be amazing at chess.
It's a sport but just a very boring one.....

definition of sport according to me: someting that excercises you in some way or another
chess excersises the mind...making it in my opinion, a sport

By that logic Jazz, someone who's good at crosswords can call himself a sportsman

How could you say that??

The fastest is Bullet chess (every player has only 60 seconds!!). It is not boring in any way.

Bullet chess also depends on player's honesty.

I used to play chess about 15 years ago (I was ranked number 6 in my local area and played in the regional finals :o )

I wouldn't class it as a sport tbh. I've always thought of sports requiring some physical exertion. Chess is certainly more mental than physical.

According to dictionary.com,

sport Audio Help /spɔrt, spoʊrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

26. Archaic. to amuse (esp. oneself).
—Idiom27. sport one's oak. oak (def. 5).

So as a quick synopsis, a sport should generally be an "athletic activity", involve "skill" and "physical prowess", be of "competitive nature" and "out of doors".

Taking the norm rather than the exception and as a sum of total parts, chess should thus be technically and categorically NOT classified as a sport as it involves only 2 of the 5 recognised characteristics ie "skill" and "competitive nature". :)

In the same token, sex is actually more sport than chess as it involves 3 of the 5 recognised characteristics except "competitive nature" and "out of doors"; generally speaking of course. :D

"Real men" shouldn't be interested to find out if chess is a sport. There must be many more macho things to talk about or do.;)
