this is a competition that caused maximum contreversy back in 99/00 season with us dropping the fa cup for it, but this year around how does it work? this will be more a global exercise than a football competition but imo we should take this more seriously this time around having been shown up at the last one, also does anyone know where this will be hosted i've heard Australia have shown an interest in hosting it in 2009, but does anyone think it's pointless ?

really, yeah i remember we one a world championship, but we also got smaashed out in brazil didnt we ? the one in japan was a one off game wasn't it ? i cant remember stephen?
The FIFA Club World Cup, formerly known as the FIFA Club World Championship, is a football competition contested between the champion clubs from all 6 continental confederations, although, since 2007, the champions of Oceania must play a qualifying play-off against the champion club of the host country.
The first competition took place in Brazil in January 2000. It was intended by FIFA to be a replacement for the Intercontinental Cup (also known as the Toyota Cup), which was contested annually in Tokyo, Japan by the champions of Europe via the Champions League and South America via the Copa Libertadores.
the one im on about is the tournment, not the one off game we played, you know when becks got sent off anyone remember ? lol

it will take quite a lot out of the players.
just hope it wont influence our title defence.
if we have successful cup runs, we would have approaching 65-70 games next season. that would be fantastic, but at the same time worrying.

There are only about 7-8 games in total, and Milan only actually played 2 games against Urawa Reds & Boca Juniors in the Finals, as did Barcelona the previous year...
So it won't tire the team out too much. At worst, we'll probably end up having some games re-arranged, which could be a real pain later on in the season...
But we'll win it.

What this tournament is about:
The FIFA Club World Cup, formerly known as the FIFA Club World Championship, is a football competition contested between the champion clubs from all 6 continental confederations, although, since 2007, the champions of Oceania must play a qualifying play-off against the champion club of the host country.
The first competition took place in Brazil in January 2000. It was intended by FIFA to be a replacement for the Intercontinental Cup (also known as the Toyota Cup), which was contested annually in Tokyo, Japan by the champions of Europe via the Champions League and South America via the Copa Libertadores.
The second edition was penciled in for Spain in 2001, to feature 12 teams. This was canceled owing to a combination of factors, most importantly the collapse of FIFA's marketing partner ISL. It was then intended to hold the event in 2003, but this also failed to happen. FIFA eventually agreed terms with the Toyota Cup to merge the two competitions, with the first installment of the relaunched Club World Championship held in Japan between December 11 and December 18, 2005.
Japan has hosted the yearly competition since, but open bidding processes for hosting it will begin with the 2009 edition.[1] Australia and the UAE have presented bids for the 2009 and 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.[2] Portugal, after initially putting forward a bid, decided to withdraw its candidacy.[3]
In February 2008, FIFA introduced a Club World Champion Badge of Honour, featuring an image of the trophy, which the reigning champion is entitled to display on its kit until the final of the next championship. Initially, all four previous champions can wear the badge until the 2008 final.[4]
The fifth-place match, dropped for the 2007 edition, will be reintroduced for the 2008 edition. The reintroduction of the match for fifth place has also prompted an increase in prize money by USD $500,000 to a total of USD $16.5 million. The winners will take away $5 million, second-placed team receives $4 million, the third-placed team $2.5 million, the fourth-placed team $2 million, the fifth-placed team $1.5 million, the sixth-placed team $1 million and the seventh-placed team will receive $500,000.[3]

could someone pm me and tell me what is tourment is about
the world club championship is when the european champions {champions league} play the winners of the south american version over one game, utd have won this in 99, and it takes place every season.
but another stupid version was also started by fifa in 99 {the one where utd received critizism for pulling out of the fa cup},this involves a few teams from around the globe taking part in a tournament where 3 or 4 games might be played .when utd took part it was played in brazil ,pressure was put on utd to take part by the goverment but the fa would not allow us to field a second string team in the fa cup while we were away so we had to pull out ,and have been critized ever since.
this tournament should never have started it just doe's not fit into the european season,to be honest i thought it was scrapped i hope it is ,if not send our second team this time.

Hardly any of the teams that win the Champo win it - AC Milan - No, Barca - No, L'Pool - No.
But we will ;) It disrupts us a bit though, because it will leave us with about 3 games in hand therefore around 6 points of the drift of things depending on the start we have.

The World Club Championship in 2000 was in January so clashed with the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
It's now held in December so that won't be a problem.
Fixture congestion is a concern though because we also have to play in the European Super Cup, which means we'll be at least 3 fixtures behind everyone else in the league.
If Chelsea make a good start then we'll have some catching up to do. AC Milan were in the bottom half of the league for ages this season and ended up finishing 5th. Hopefully, we'll cope better than that!

i think your find that was the inter continental cup or whatever its called. you only play one game in that. its always hosted in tokyo and its the winners from south americas version of the champions league. normally our side of the planet win it
the fifa world club championships consists of the champions of continental champions all around the world. not just europe and south americmost popular teams to get chucked in are few asian clubs an argentinian or brazilian club and i have seen american clubs in it before.
you have the option not to enter it and i dont think liverpool did in 05
when we done it in brazil in 99/00 season we got spanked and fergie blamed it on the heat
but i would like us to enter it as we have never won this in our history. however, i do not think we will as fergie has bad views on it and i think he would rather retain the league and champions league than win this. hopefully tho we will because id like to go to it
anyone know how tickets will go for this?

The Intercontinental Cup was in November 1999. We beat Palmeiras 1-0.
The first World Club Championship was in January 2000 and featured United, Real Madrid, Vasco da Gama, Corinthians, Necaxa, South Melbourne and a couple of other teams. As you can see there were 2 European sides and 2 Brazilian sides. We got knocked out in the group stage, Real Madrid came 4th and it was won by Corinthians.
Both of these tournaments were replaced by the FIFA Club World Cup in 2005.
Liverpool entered the FIFA Club World Cup after winning the Champions League in 2005 and lost in the final against Sao Paulo.

True, but the format had changed. There were no group stages - Liverpool entered the tournament in the semi-finals and only 6 teams took part.
The 'quarter-finals' only had 4 teams in them. The losers of them played a 5th/6th place playoff. Then 2 more teams enter at the semi-final stage - the losers play a 3rd/4th place playoff.

If we can go to Saudi Arabia and play in a freindly in the middle of our season...I think we will cope with the European Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup...its just an extra 3 games overseas...win 3 games and win 2 trophies is a good thing for both publicity, honours, income and other fans around the world can see us play...good thing is that we will play in all competitions domestically unlike in 2000...AC Milan might of had a poor season this season and participated in both but we are a much better team than them and I think we can cope and win em all! Thank God the Intercontinental Cup is no longer played because that would of meant more fixtures!

Obviously this would be a great one to win but Im not sure how serious
Fergie is taking it. Should he even be too bothered?
A few interesting quotes from him in this morning's paper:
"I will have to be sensible when the Club World Championship comes around - and that means leaving players behind in England.
"It is flattering to be going to Japan, but it's not ideal because we will have games on December 26 and 28 when we get home, followed by the FA Cup.
"So I will have to be careful about the players I pick to go.
"Much will depend on the form of the team and the players I have available through injuries and suspensions, but it is possible that I will leave a lot of our more senior players behind.
"Jet-lag becomes a problem when you return from the Far East so I will have to manage it in the right way and do what is good for Manchester United."
We will need a bit of luck regarding injuries this season cos we have a
mountain of fixtures.
Where does this trophy rank for you? Is it the be all and end all?
Discuss.

TheManc

Well for me our priorities for this are:
1. Premiership / CL
2. CL / Premiership
3. FA Cup / World Club Championships
4. World Club Championships / FA Cup
5. Carling Cup
6. Super Cup
7. Community Shield.
So really its between that and the FA Cup for 3rd spot. I think the FA Cup is maybe more prestigeous but I quite fancy being called 'World Champions' lol.
We can win the FA Cup next season but we might not get the chance to win the WCC for another few years.
Judging by Fergie's comments he'll probably use some of the younger players. I've not problem with that because we have a very big squad plus the winners of the Copa Libatodores are LDU (or something like that) who were supposed to be quite poor and were very lucky to win it.
Our reserves could probably beat the other 1 or 2 teams we have to face. (champions of Asia or something like that)
-----------------------------Foster------------------------------
--Rafael----------Brown---------Evans-------------Fabio--
------------Fletcher----Anderson---Rodrigo------------------
--Park--------------------------------------------------Nani--
-----------------------------Tevez*----------------------------
Subs: Amos, O'Shea, Silvestre, Pettrucci, Wellbeck, Macheda, (Gibson and martin if they're with us still)
* Or New striker
That team looks decent enough to me because we won't be playing teams like Boca Jrns or any other top South American team, plus we'll have a great chance to show off some youngsters.
This competition is a big deal in South America so with us playing 5 players from there it will really boost our reputation over there.
Jazz 16

Decent enough team there^^^
Bit surprised you rate the Carling cup higher than the Super Cup. The Super cup
is quite prestigous I would have thought? It would be a great trophy to have in
the cabinet, better imo than the Carling cup (kiddies cup).
Your right about that team that won the Copa Lib. They were the Greece of
that competition. They draw most of their games 0-0, won the odd one 1-0,
and won the final on peno's (I think). United would be far superior, even with
a 'reserve' team like the one you named above.

Yeah I was thinking about changing the Super Cup and the Carling cup around, but for me I am really looking forward to the Carling cup this season because I know we will play our youngsters in all the rounds so obviously if we win that then if will help our youngsters to really leave an impression on Fergie.
I suppose The Super cup is more prestigeous but if you look at it, its one match, wheras if we were to win the Carling cup we might not get the credit from around Europe as we would with the Super Cup but its a great chance for us to see the likes of Rodrigo, the Da Silvas ect in some competitive games.
We are lucky this year that Boca or another top S.American team didn't win because if they did we would have had to play a stronger team.

It is important in the fact, that somewhere deep in my heart, I fully believe we are going to win all 7 trophies. Common sense says otherwise, but "football, bloody hell."
In all honesty, it is ridiculous for the FA not to be nicer with the scheduling in my opinion. wouldn't it be nice for the Premier League (not just United) to boast that they are to the Champions of Europe, and the world as well.
Hopefully though, we will have a lead of some sorts by December in the league, so Fergie can take a little stronger side.

way to look at it is would you want fergie to stuff up players fitness mid-season for what is ultimately the World Charity Shield or use it like Fergie did in 99/00 to give players extra break and then go into new year to bomb on for a 18th league title and another crack at Champions League.
I dont even need a second to think about that one. Some mickey mouse one game tournament dont make you World Champions.
Send out the kids and if we win, good. If not then it aint end of the world in my eyes. This tournament should come even behind League Cup imo.
