Pele has warned Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney that he must learn to control his temper if he is to become a world class player.
Rooney has been criticised for his aggressive approach in United's 1-1 draw with South African outfit Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
The England striker received a yellow card for a rash challenge on Tinashe Nengomashe, while Onismor Bhasera claims he was elbowed.
And Brazilian legend Pele believes Rooney, who was substituted after one hour, must learn to control his physical approach in order to reproduce his form of four years ago.
"I like Wayne Rooney, but he hasn't reached the peak of Euro 2004 again," said Pele.
"He had two or three very good years and then lost a little bit in his performances. I don't know why.
"When he's tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself - not attack the opponent.
"If you can protect yourself against challenges, it will be easier to keep your temper.
"It should be possible because referees also help strikers now.
"Once a defender gets a yellow card, he knows one more tackle could see him sent off so they don't make another bad challenge."

The strange thing is I think if anything he's gotten much meeker over the years. I feel like bringing back his temper...
I don't know. You look at Roy Keane and his fiery nature made him. However you also look back at all the defining matches of his career.
FA Cup semi against Arsenal. Giggs scores a wonder goal & Keane was in the dressing room, Red Card.
CL Final 99. Enough said. IS the temper worth it? Who knows.

I actually thought he calmed down last year, but I actually think Rooney plays some of his best football either when hes riled or when hes in a really, really good mood.
But, he does over-step the mark at times.
I'm not really sure whether I want him to calm down or not though

I think he is controlling his temper much better these days. It was a warm sunny day in South Africa so perhaps he literally got a little overheated.
I was more concerned when he was acting petulantly e.g. sarcastically applauding the ref.
There's no harm in letting the opposition know you're there by roughing them up a bit ;)

Me too.
I don't actually think there is much wrong with his temper.

Hes really good friends with Sir Alex.
Their was a story about 2 years ago that he was going to come to Utd in a role and was going to replace Sir Alex, which was just rumours in the end.

I think Rooney's temper is one of the things that makes him so popular, reminds me of Keano. Until he's breaking someone's knees (and even when Keano did that it was the best thing EVER) I don't think theres much to worry about.

He needs to keep the temper but direct it more.
I don't like to see him swearing at referee but I
love to see his aggression on the ball, it's what
makes him the player he is.

If Rooney calms down he wont be half the player he is now. I agree his passion and his will to win the game does cross the line sometimes but thats the kind of player Rooney is and if you take that away he'll be another average striker.

Cant change him, and hge will see red a few more times in his career.
Same as Keane and Eric......Id rather he was like that than otherwise.
And why is Pele always sticking his nib in?
He comes out with some terrible **** sometimes, although he may have a
bit of a point here...but I dont see how it concerns him.

He was sent off in Europe for 'clapping' the ref. Porto game I believe
He also had that infamous one in the World Cup.
Though I think just the once for United, it should have been a few more.
He's gotten away with a few over the years :p

Villarreal in the Champions League ;)
He was sent off in the Porto game because he jumped up to try to head the ball and the defender (Pepe, who now plays for Real Madrid ;)) didn't try to win the ball so Rooney caught him with his arm. It was completely accidental but the ref sent him off simply because it was Wayne Rooney. It was the same game that Scholes got sent off in for 2 yellows.
(Rooney sending off Vs Porto - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uNRU_a8XgGc)
But, in terms of bookings, I think sometimes its his fault. But a lot of times I think its harsh and its his reputation that gets him booked.

Yeah I remember now. The porto one should never have been a sending off.

I'm sure someone just ask him during an interview...kinda like how he said that Ronaldo should honor his contract...just answering the question as honestly as he can, so I don't see a problem with it...If anything, it was a stupid question ;)
As far as Wazza is concerned, you can never play with enough fire for me, just don't do the stupid stuff like clapping at the refs that enhances his reputation

Not exactly on Rooney's temperament alone but a valid concern no doubt. And didn't want to start a new Rooney thread or dig out some past ones....
Hope his marriage would eventually calm him down and may Fergie NOT played him on the flanks again please.

Wayne Rooney needs a sharper Manchester United focus
Of the 50,000 who crammed into Newlands to see Manchester United draw the opening game of their tour of South Africa, around a fifth possessed vuvuzelas - long plastic horns that will become the sound of the next World Cup. And when, after 64 fitful minutes Wayne Rooney trudged off, they sounded as one in a bleary symphony for another bleary performance from the most naturally gifted English footballer of his generation.
Rooney's game is not in crisis but it lacks both edge and focus. His display in a pre-season friendly in Cape Town did not differ too much from the one in the European Cup final, in which he was substituted long before the decisive penalty shoot-out with Chelsea. There was plenty of energy but little end product.
These are the kind of games that worry his supporters, who range from Fabio Capello to Pele. "I like Wayne Rooney, but he hasn't reached the peak of Euro 2004," reflected the greatest footballer to draw breath. "He had two or three very good years but then he lost a little bit from his performances. I don't know why.
"When he is tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself - not attack the opponent. If you can protect yourself against challenges, it will be easier to keep your temper."
Rooney did not keep his temper against Kaizer Chiefs, becoming involved in a spat with their right-back, Jimmy Tau, who said the striker had been "a bit emotional after being frustrated. It was out of frustration that the did that".
Rooney has returned from his wedding looking rather too heavy although, given his ability to burn off calories, that will not worry either United or England as much as his inability to focus on a clear role.
Like Pele, Capello has harked back to Euro 2004 when Rooney rampaged through the tournament like a young bull and then announced himself as a Manchester United player with a hat-trick in his opening game.
"He has to play like he did in Portugal four years ago," the England manager remarked before the last international at Wembley against the United States. "I want him to play with his face rather than his back to goal," he said. "I have said to him that he is too generous; he tries to do too much."
It is an analysis with which Sir Alex Ferguson would agree. These days you might find Rooney tackling back on the edge of his own area, driving down the left wing or setting up goals for Cristiano Ronaldo with his instinctive vision. But seldom does he simply attack a defence as he did in Portugal, although should Ferguson succeed in prising Dimitar Berbatov from the reluctant hands of the Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, that may change.
It may not be a coincidence that Rooney's best season for United in terms of Premier League goals (16) came in 2005-06, the last in which he had a pure centre-forward in the shape of Ruud van Nistelrooy to play off. Louis Saha, rarely fit, has provided no kind of foil.

Pele seems to be a big fan of Rooney actually.
He once said that Rooney was a better player than Ronaldo (the slave Ronaldo ;))

I think people are just too anal about it. He's not someone to take his issues personally. I mean how many times have you seen him go back to apologize or help up someone from the other team. He's playing the game the way it should be played. Football is physical, and anytime there is physical interaction there's going to tight strings sometimes. That's just the game. Let them play and if it goes from competitive to personal then intervene.
