Sir Alex Ferguson has become the latest high-profile football figure to criticise FIFA president Sepp Blatter's claim that Manchester United are treating Cristiano Ronaldo like 'a slave'.

Blatter caused outrage after his comments about the Portugal international, who only signed an extended five-year contract at Old Trafford 12 months ago. Ferguson has continually insisted Ronaldo is not for sale and remains determined to stave off Real Madrid's attempts to sign the 23-year-old.

Speaking after his side's 2-1 friendly victory over Portsmouth in Nigeria over the weekend, Sir Alex said: "It was an unfortunate statement from someone in such a position.

"Slavery was abolished many years ago. These days footballers can earn five or six million pounds a year. I do not want to dignify this kind of statement with a response but when you consider the history of slavery, it was a very unfortunate statement."
