George Best's hometown airport has been renamed in his honour, on the day that would have marked his 60th birthday. More than 200 family, friends and fans gathered as the George Best Belfast City Airport was unveiled. Every political party in Northern Ireland supported the idea of a memorial for the Manchester United legend, a sign of just how much power the genius commanded in the divided Province. "The renaming of the airport after the one and only George Best is a significant beginning towards ensuring that the spirit of the 'Belfast boy' lives on for a long time in his home city," Lord Mayor of the city Wallace Browne said. The airport will also feature a fixture for the George Best foundation, which was set up by the Best family to fund research into liver disease and promote youth football. "This is a very special day for us. We are delighted that the airport, situated close to the family home in East Belfast, will now act as a permanent memorial to honour George," Best's sister Barbara McNarra stated
