Manchester United insist they've never sought to block Wayne Rooney from playing for England.
Club officials have categorically denied asking for Rooney to be withdrawn.
Reports have claimed United made a request to England chiefs on the basis Rooney would not be fit at any stage in the tournament, however the Old Trafford club deny having taken such action.
"This is completely without foundation," said a United spokesman.
"As a member of the England squad, we have no right to demand Wayne Rooney or anyone else be withdrawn."
United had earlier released a statement wishing Rooney and the England team good luck in their quest to lift the World Cup in Germany next month.
That conciliatory gesture is the broadest hint yet that no legal proceedings will be launched by United at any stage over Rooney's fitness.
