The revelation that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has committed to Juan Miguel Villar Mir's Real Madrid presidential election ticket has thrown Portugal's World Cup quarterfinal preparations into disarray.

The Mirror says with just three days before their World Cup quarter-final clash with England, Ronaldo has found himself embroiled in a furious row with United over his astonishing claim.

United have demanded an explanation from Ronaldo, who is said to have been deeply troubled by the timing of the revelations and the anger they have stirred up back at Old Trafford.

The controversy is the worst possible preparation for Ronaldo ahead of Saturday's showdown with England, when the 21-year-old winger's mind should be focused on the World Cup.

United are furious with Ronaldo, after handing him a lucrative five-year £50,000-a-week contract extension.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be livid with the claims from Ronaldo which prompted United, who usually decline to comment on such issues, to issue an unequivocal rebuttal.

If he does not want to stay, then sell him. I do not want to see players at OT who do not want to be there. So saying, its probably speculation anyway.

Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished claims from Real Madrid presidential candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir that Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to move to the Bernabeu. Villar Mir has claimed that he has brokered a deal for the Portuguese starlet to join Los Merengues should he emerge victorious in the Spanish giants' elections.

However presidential candidates are known to be keen to lure voters with promises of big names, with players such as Arjen Robben, Michael Carrick and even Barcelona's Lionel Messi being drawn into the affair in recent days.
The Spanish press had quoted Ronaldo (http://home.skysports.com/list.asp?hlid=398695&CPID=8&CLID=1&lid=&title=Ronaldo+ready+for+Real+switch&channel=)as indicating he felt the time was right to leave Old Trafford and move to La Liga as part of Villar Mir's project, but Red Devils boss Ferguson is confident his young winger will stay in The Premiership.
"There isn't a problem with the boy and I don't expect any problems," Ferguson told MUTV.

"Over the years when people have been involved in a bid to become president at Madrid they have used clubs like ours. "They talk about what they're going to do for Madrid and how they will bring in big players.
