Madeleine McCann: suspect's home searched
Last Updated: 2:07pm BST 04/08/2007
Police in Portugal investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have
begun another search at the home of the only official suspect in the case.
The new search could last four days.
Up to 10 police officers, including two British detectives, starting searching the
land surrounding the house of Robert Murat at about 7am today, his spokesman
Tuck Price said.
They are clearing undergrowth and cutting down trees on the property in Praia da
Luz, just yards from where the little girl was snatched from her family's holiday
apartment more than three months ago.
The area is said to be thick with vegetation and the officers are using rakes and
hedge trimmers to clear the area.
Mr Murat is not at home, and the search is expected to last up to four days.
The latest search in Portugal comes as police in Belgium investigate a possible
sighting of the four-year-old there.
A customer at a restaurant in the Flemish town of Tongeren, not far from the
Dutch border, said she was "100% sure" she had seen the youngster.
She said the girl was with a couple, a Dutch man and an English-speaking
woman, who were acting strangely and not like "normal parents".
A police spokeswoman said they were treating the report "seriously" and are
looking for DNA on a drinks bottle used by the girl.
They have also issued an identikit drawing of the man based on the description
given by the "trusted witness".
Today's search of Casa Liliana, the villa in which Mr Murat lives with his mother,
Jenny, is not the first time the property has come under scrutiny.
Mr Murat, 33, was thrown into the spotlight 11 days after the four-year-old from
Rothley, Leicestershire, was snatched from her bed in the Algarve village.
Then officers from Portugal's investigative Policia Judiciaria searched the house
extensively, which is just a short walk from the apartment where the McCanns
were staying at the time of the abduction.
Several items were taken away for analysis while Mr Murat's girlfriend Michaela
Walczuch and her estranged Portuguese husband Luis Antonio were also
interviewed as witnesses.
Mr Murat was named as an official suspect, but was never formally arrested.
In July he was re-interviewed by police investigating the youngster's
disappearance.
I hope people dont forget about little Madeleine - she WILL be found :(

Why are they doing this when a "red hot" sighting was done in Holland?? A dutch speaking man, with an english speaking lady and a girl remarkably like Maddie were seen in a restaurant. The informer went to phone the police and when she returned to her table, the "family" had split.

I think this is weird........you know if I see young girl and I think this is Madeleine - I will go to the 'parents' and I will say "hey you wait with me and we check the girl out - if you have nothing to hide this is ok......" if they run off there must be a problem - if they say "yes ok we wait" then thats good.......no way would I walk away and leave the little girl !!!

Wealthy parents - strange circumstance for her to go missing makes good news for these newspapers !!!
These parents of Madeleine have many questions to answer if you ask me - they leave their little girl to go for food. This is bloody crazy - I take my little cousin Ilona for 2 week holiday 2 months ago - we go from Romania to Moldova and Ukraine and for this time she is never out my sight and no one go near her or I will give them big problems !!!!

Carly - I agree, I can't believe the aprents would leave the children. I've spoken with a few people on my forum about this and they don't see a problem, but to me it's a big no no.
I hope they find the person/s who took her or perhaps she wandered off, either way it must be traumatic for her parents :(

Apparently the restaurant was less than 20 yards from their room BUT they STILL left a child unattended - thats sacrilege in my book. And, I do not understand why a man was seen carrying a child in a blanket right past them (near enough) and nobody said anything???
When I lived in Germany in the 80s, my children were all tucked up in bed and the block was having a NY cellar party, my flat was 3 floors up. My wife wanted to go down, but I said that I was NOT leaving the kids on their own - end of.

When I have my children I tell you this - they will never be away from me no matter what !!! Maybe 20 metres is not far but now it seems is too far away - the baby is now gone. My baby will never be left like this.......they leave Madeleine and this is wrong so now they must answer questions to the courts why they allow their little girl to go through what she is going through !!!
Maybe they feel sad and shocked but I tell you this is nothing compared to what this little girl is feeling right now !!! This is terrible way to care for babies and they still have 2 more - maybe these 2 are not safe with them !!!

I'm just going to throw my two cents in here...I do not know of any of their progress since it was big news worldwide but I can't see how she would still be alive. It's so unfortunate but in my mind either two things could of happened.. 1) a 'human' took her and we all know what normally happens... or 2)she's been kidnapped and is living with another family or something. Perhaps 2 is wishful thinking...

Madeleine McCann's blood has been found on the walls of the holiday flat where she slept, according to fresh reports in Portugal.
Police say attempts were made to clean it off, making it likely that the four-year-old was killed, either by accident or design, in the holiday complex in Praia da Luz.
It follows revelations, 95 days on from her disappearance, that specially-trained British ****er spaniel sniffer dogs had located the smell of a dead body in the Ocean Club apartment - only possible if a cadaver had been left there for at least two hours.
Which does not fit in with the parents story that they checked on the children every 15 - 30 minutes.

Reports in the British media are saying that the dogs found the 'blood'. None of the reports I've read have mentioned the 'smell of a dead body'.

The mother of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann is to be formally declared
a suspect by Portuguese police.
A family friend of Kate McCann said Mrs McCann has been told she will be named
an official “arguido” when she returns to the police station for further questioning
later today.
After Mrs McCann was questioned for over 11 hours yesterday, the McCann’s
lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu, insisted she was interviewed only as a witness.
Portuguese laws severely restrict what those privy to an investigation may say
publicly, but Mrs McCann is said to be “amazed and concerned” by the news that
her status has changed.
Previously Kate McCann and her husband Gerry had always met police together
and officials described the meetings as informal. Both have denied any
involvement in their daughter's disappearance.
But yesterday Mrs McCann was interviewed alone and Mr McCann is expected to
be interviewed separately at around 2pm today.
Leaving the police station in Portimao, a town in the Algarve, at around 1am local
time, Mrs McCann looked gaunt and tired and did not speak to the media.
Mrs McCann was asked to go to the police station after authorities received
forensic evidence recovered from the holiday apartment in the Algarve where
Madeleine vanished on May 3.
Portuguese detectives are said to have a series of 22 questions which they felt
unable to put to Mrs McCann before she was declared an official suspect.
The move is not thought to signal that police are any closer to making any arrest
or bringing charges.
Under Portuguese law, an arguido has certain legal protection that is not
extended to a witness, including the right to remain silent during questioning and
the right to legal representation.
It is not uncommon for people caught up in criminal investigations in Portugal to
declare themselves arguidos in order to receive this protection.
The family spokesman said: “Just before the session ended last night, they made
it clear they had some further questions to ask which would require her to be in
arguido status rather than just witness status.”
He could not confirm what these questions were, or whether Mr McCann will also
be made an arguido when he reports to the police station later.
The spokesman said: “She is shocked and surprised in several ways.
First of all that such an accusation could be made against her. “And obviously she
is concerned that such a line of investigation can become a distraction from
further attempts to find Madeleine.”
Police spokesman Olegario de Sousa said yesterday his team had been satisfied
with the results of the forensic evidence returned by the Forensic Science Service
in Birmingham.
“I can confirm that we have received part of the results and the team is satisfied
(with the results),” Mr de Sousa said.
Local newspapers have reported that the results included a sample of a speck of
blood found on the wall of the McCann’s apartment.
A Briton living in Praia da Luz had previously been identified by police as the only
suspect in the investigation and his house has been searched twice.
Madeleine’s parents have campaigned relentlessly to draw attention to the case
and a fund they started to help find missing or abducted children has raised more
than £1 million.
They have visited several countries where she could have been taken by an
abductor and met with foreign officials.
They recently indicated they may soon return to Britain. Their efforts led to a
meeting with Pope Benedict in Rome who blessed a picture of Madeleine a few
weeks after the disappearance. British business tycoons and celebrities ranging
from “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling to soccer stars have contributed to
reward for her return.

Her parents did it. They sedated her to keep her asleep, how else would you keep a 3 year old in bed when your not there. They over medicated her and she died. They made it look like someone had sneaked in and stole her. They found traces of her blood in the rental care they had, which they rented 30 DAYS AFTER SHE WENT MISSING.

my missus has sky news on all the time following this story, its very sad indeed, but i also feel sorry for all the other parents out there who's child has gone missing and get no media coverage what so ever, i bet if it was my child who went missing off our council estate in manchester it would'nt even make the national news. it's all about the money, coz there both well respected members of the public who happen to be doctors with plenty of money they get so much media coverage it's pretty sad if you ask me.
just after she went missing the mccanns did a tv interview and the father was talking, and he said a huge wait as been lifted of my shoulders now we have set up a FUND. i thought you fcuking what? i couldnt believe my ears he was going on about money when his daughter was missing. if i was in that situation i'd give up all my money ( if i had any) every thing i owned and i'd give up my life to get my child back without hesatation

Firstly, do not go by what either the Press say or the Portuguese Police - they are making it up as they go along and the Police are breaking their owns laws in this. The McCann's are not allowed to discuss the case by Portuguese law, which is why they are saying nothing BUT neither are the Police who ARE leaking stuff to the Press, presumably on backhanders.

This whole sorry business has gone on far too long and, as far as I am concerned, there is something very "fishy" about all this.
I am a parent. I have 2 daughters and a son. If one of my daughters had "vanished" in this way I would be personally digging up all of Portugal to find her and would be out of my head.
At no time have I even spotted a hint of a tear or anything other than blank faces on either of her parents. I have seen no signs of sorrow whatesoever.
Also, the original story about the restaurant being "by the hotel front door" was exagerated. The hotel cannot even be seen from the restaurant.
A family friend who saw a "girl" being carried out in a blanket could not describe the person. Family friend!!!! And she did not recognise Madeline??? Family friend!!!! Who later changed her story to include a description of the pyjamas Maddie was allegedly wearing?
This whole story sucks and I do not believe that the child is actually "missing" at all - my fears are far worse.
Story is compunded by total incompetence by the local Police. The "crime" scene was not isolated. The flat was re-let only days later. Any evidence was totally destroyed within hours by parades of people walking unrestricted through the flat. Reporters had stories leaked to them from within the police dept. I suspect something extremely sinister here.

It is sad yes, but sinister I'm not so sure.
It is not the parents fault that the Police have been disgraceful in their search and enquiries.
And to say that the parents haven't shed a tear on TV means there is something sinister going on or that they don't care is just ignorant.
On TV they are making a genuine appeal for there daughter to be returned. Crying and weeping will not get them anywhere.
The kidnappers don't care in the slightest about the well being of Kate and Gerry McCann......
I think Madeline really was kidnapped and I believe the way the case has been hanled has been disgraceful.
The longer the debacle goes on and the more coverage it gets, it is only natural that some media outlets are going to look to cause controversy and conspiracy theories will be spread.
In my humble opinion Madeline is probably dead and her kidnappers have just disappeared to another country and are trying to start a new life or something.
I don't think they will ever find Madeline.
