Liverpool pipped Manchester United to top spot in an all-time league table dating back to the start of English League football and published by The Times on Monday.

According to the standings which awards three points for a win and one for a draw since the start of league football in 1888, Liverpool, who have won a record 18 titles, emerged with 5,927 points from their 3,643 matches - an average of 1.63 points a game.

Manchester United, who have won 15 titles, were second with 5,337 points from their 3,287 matches - an average of 1.62 points per game followed by Arsenal, champions 13 times, who totalled 5,780 points from 3,643 matches at 1.59 points a match.

Despite playing only 2,063 matches in the top division, Leeds United were fourth with 1.48 average points with Aston Villa fifth (1.47), Everton sixth (1.47), Tottenham Hotspur seventh (1.44), Newcastle United eighth (1.43), Wolverhampton Wanderers ninth (1.42) and Burnley tenth (1.41).

Chelsea, champions for the last two seasons, are 14th (average 1.39 points) and would have to total more than 90 points a season for the next 23 years to overhaul Liverpool's present average points per game.

Leyton Orient, who spent one season in the top division in 1962-63, placed 62nd and last in the list with 0.64 points a match.

Everton, founder members of the league in 1888, have played more top flight matches than any other club: 4,027 while Liverpool have won more than anyone else: 1,674. Everton also hold the record for drawn games (987) and defeats (1,402).

Just a personal opinion here, but i think that these sort of things mean nothing.

I dont entirely agree with your opinion there, even though such statistics hardly matter in deciding the outcome of the coming season, still it reflects on a club's glorious past.

This does not take into account the number of 1-0 wins by both Liverppol and Arsenal; to win 9-0 takes the same points as a dull 1-0 defensive game. Its statistically interesting but means actually very little.

This may be a touchy subject with some but I wonder how many more trophys would have been won if "Munich" did not happen? I believe it was eight years between wins. All I know is that I like the history of Manchester United and couldn't care about Liverpool. Right now, who has more supporters? Answer - Man Utd.

The Busby Babes were recognised at the time as on a par with the then legendary Real Madrid, if not better? They really were an amazing team. They would have won the European Cup in 58 and possibly quite a bit afterwards, not too mention leagues and cups. To put it into some sort of perspective, Booby Moore would not have had a look in, in the England setup, if Duncan Edwards had survived.

its deffinetly a nice thing to have a good history, but the good history will fade if we dun watch out for the future....

Liverpool are undoubtably the most successful club in the history of english football but give it another ten fifteen years and i'm sure we will overtake them at the top of the pile

The article is from July 2006 i.e. at the end of the 05/06 season.

Last season both teams played 38 league games, United amassing 89 points and Liverpool with 68 points.

This season United have played 9 games winning 20 points and Liverpool have played 8 games winning 16 points.

This means the total are now...

United - 3334 games played, 5446 points, 1.633 points per game

Liverpool - 3689 games played, 6003 points, 1.627 points per game

We are now better than Liverpool by 0.006 points per game. Wahoo!

Just a personal opinion here, but i think that these sort of things mean nothing.

I agree to a certain degree. There's no need to put to much emphasis on statistics like this.

It does tell something about the history of the club, and as a fan history means fairly much. Take this example, it shows that since the 1888 Liverpool have taken more points, which is a reason as to why we have taken the most Premier League tittles.

With that in mind, the only thing more important then history to a fan, is the present. Having success NOW is always going to be more important then what you did 5...10...50 years ago.

In that perspective, such statistics count for little. But it does count for something

Why?

Why waste your life hating something. Be positive. Ignore the pratts - let THEM be consumed with the hate and jealousy THEY profess to occupy their lives with. Why drag yourself down to their level?

Time to grow up eh?

Ignore everything and you become blind to the world. Every human must have something to hate and something to love and alot of things in between. This is why sports are so popular =]
