The Ex-Leeds United player had suffered an horific injury in the Fa Cup semi Final clash with Liverpool .
Smith was not expected to return to action before the end of september following the career threatening injury to his ankle .
Even Ferguson claimed the fans wont see Smith in action untill early september just a few days back in press conference .
But the player has suprised Ferguson , his teammates and fans by returning to training way before schedule in putting in a splendid performance .
The United boss returned to training a day late from the clubs pre-season tournament in South Africa and was surprised as well as delighted to see Alan Smith beat him to work and already training hard at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground.
A United spokesman said: “Everyone was thrilled to see Alan at training. “He was the surprise face at the ground, there’s no doubt about that.”
Now that Smith is back it would be interesting to see if Ferguson makes him play as a midfielder or a striker , the early return would also mean that Old Trafford might not see a new striker yet .
