Manchester United defender Wes Brown is resigned to the fact that Gary Neville will take his place in the starting XI.

Brown has been ever-present for Sir Alex Ferguson's side this season, but United's captain is closing in on a comeback to the first-team.

Neville has been on the sidelines for nearly a month after injuring his ankle against Bolton back in March.

A thigh injury curtailed the England international's first comeback, but the Red Devils stalwart is confident of featuring within the next two weeks.

Team player

Brown explained that while he has thoroughly enjoyed his consistent run in the side, he accepts that Neville will take his place once he is fit.

"It has been great to play. It is always good to get a run in the side so early in the season," he said.

"But Gary is getting close to his comeback now so when he does return I will make sure I am ready when needed.

"Gary is captain of the club, so when he is fit he will definitely be back in the side."

He is far better than brown in honesty anyway. Good of brown not to get bitter or anything.

browns not a full back but he sure as hell dont give much to the opposition which is dam good, really wished SAF would have given one of the younger right backs a shot, simpson or bardsley, although we cant see how well they train, imo it would have meant more balance with two better adapted attacking full backs

Brown has been brilliant so far for us this season, and is happy to be on the bench aswell, we could do with more players like that :)

You don't want players to be happy sitting on the bench mate. You want them to be forcing their way into the team by desperation to get on and play with the heart!

Yeah i know mate, but what i mean is he is happy to be used when the manager needs him, and doesn't go on tv and say stuff like ''i don't know why the manager doesn't use me i'm fit'' (Shevchenko by the way)! He is a true red!;)

although brown can a do a job in defence it's going forward where we really miss gary neville, his engine up and down the wing and ability to cross a ball is second to none. he also has a great understanding with giggs and ronaldo (who ever might be on the right wing) as he did with beckham

If Wes plays like he did today, Gary will find it difficult getting back in. Wes had such a solid game. One of his best ever games for United.

Brown has been very consistent this season, I personally thought he was M.O.T.M against Chelsea, Nev faces a big fight getting back into the team, The competition for places is good for the team!!

He deffo' is! Along with VDS, Rio, Vida & Evra, the back 5 forms the best defensive back-line in the whole world of Europe this season. Well, 15 goals conceded in the Premiership...so what do you actually think? ;)

i think brown has been brilliant. he deserves that right back spot. further, with all the injuries he had, can gary neville be as mobile as he was? brown seems to be made for united system. he's very mobile. just lacking a little pace, but otherwise, he is solid.

Neville won't get a starting role until United secures the title...that's for sure..or unless United has a minimum 3 goal lead...so...Brown shouldn't be worried this season.

wes brown has done absolutely nothing to be dropped. neville shud not be thrown in at this stage of the season, he hasn't played in over a year and is gettin on a bit. our defence has been amazing all season why change it? plus i d'nt tink we're missing g neville going forward.

Hey ease off on Shevchenko. He's one of my favourite players and let's be honest he's taken the humiliation Chelski have dished out to him with remarkably good humor and attitude. A fit Shevchenko deserves to be miles ahead of Anelka and Kalou and for me he's a better finisher than Drogba. He just needs good service which Chelski can't provide. He should move to a proper club.

P.S. Hope Gary get's back on the pitch soon.

I'd have thought Brown would switch to CB whilst Nemanja is out (although if I was Fergie I'd be quite tempted to have O'Shea alongisde Ferdinand that worked quite well on Tuesday.)

Why? Because he's played a hell of a lot more games than Brown... I feel Brown has sufficiently impressed me to be our fixed right back. I find him a better defender than Gary Neville.. solid as a rock. He used to get skimmed like a b!tch because of a lack of games... Since he's been at right back he's starting to show his true quality.. an amazing defender. ANd because he's more a central defender than right defender, he links better with the other lads... I'm sure our goal record is better this season with Wes Brown, than it was last year with gary neville... While NEville is club cappy, i'd prefer to see Brown take over there in the long term.. much better than gary neville imo. ANd fully in his right to bitch about it, but fair play to him he doesn't. He'll leave quietly instead A sad day for Old Trafford indeed. I just hope the Rb role is shared between Gary and Wessy next season..

But yes. Wes has done a better job at Rb that did Gary Neville last season. His crosses aren't that good, but since when do we play long pass game anyway? Them days of Becks are gone.. i loved the way Wes Brown adapted to take note of his inability to cross and delivering a short pass instead, that coincidently still leads to a goal for us. Wes is a more complete Rb than is Gary Neville.. just as good at tackling, just as hard working and just a good attitude. Except, he's a more overall complete defender and fits in with the back 4 better than does gary neville. Neville's days are numbered i hope

Not really. he was just a big fish in a small easy going pond. he came to England at his peak.. and failed miserably.. we now see his true class as an athlete and not someone whos cores easy goals with the support of his whole team. a good striker in italy but nowhere else.

lets end this wes is a great player and would get in most teams but he is keeping the roll warm for nevilles return this season or next

This has probably been Wesley's best seaon and ironically it could well be his last. If Wes does go I don't think SAF will go rushing into the transfer market to bring in another right back. Gary Neville will be ready for next season and will be chomping at the bit for first team action. Also we have the likes of John O'Shea and Danny Simpson who can fill the gap if needed.

No doubt Wes is a good defender though and it would be ashame to lose him.
