MAN UTD TO BE BEST ON THE PLANET
Sir Alex Ferguson believes his current Manchester United side can develop into
the best team in the world.
The United boss has been irked by suggestions that Arsene Wenger’s unbeaten
Arsenal will sweep all before them this season.
Ferguson insists his new-look team will have the trophies at the end of the
season to back up his belief they are the best, regardless of the result of today’s
top-of-the-table showdown at the Emirates.
Ferguson said: “The test of it is what’s in the trophy cabinet at the end of the
season. That’s the best way to judge it. Arsenal are no different from us, Chelsea
or Liverpool. They’re judged on what they win.
“Winning the Premier League will be one way of deciding that. Success in
European football is another way. Hopefully we can win both competitions to
convince everyone we have a team that deserves the consideration of being the
best.
“In two or three years’ time I want to be saying about my players they are the
best in the world because at this moment they are showing those signs.
“Time will tell. Players such as Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and Tevez are all
young and have the best of their careers in front of them. Maturity brings the
authority and consistency and also what is important is what they win.
“Can they go on to win European Championships, are they playing in World Cup
finals? These are all things that true greats like Pele, Cruyff and Maradona were
judged on.
“These are the challenges for them. Any young player with potential must always
be judged that way.”
Ferguson remains undaunted by Arsenal’s record of 13 wins and two draws in
their 15 games in all competitions this season – because United have won their
last 11 in the Premier and Champions Leagues, and have spectacularly overcome
their early season sterility with 16 goals in their last four games.
He said: “I couldn’t be happier with our form. We’re producing good attacking
play, we are creating chances, scoring a lots of goals – four goals in four games
for the first time since 1907. That’s good.
“There are goals in us, no doubt about that. I couldn’t be going into a big game in
any better shape – but then I’m sure Arsene Wenger is saying the same about
his side.
“Both teams will be hell-bent on making sure they win, which is the
mouthwatering aspect of it. Anyone who’s got a ticket will be rubbing their hands
because, without question, the form of both teams, the goals they’re scoring and
the football they’re playing, points to a big occasion.
“These big games are always tense. The tenacity and intensity of games at the
highest level these days is enormous.
“What won’t escape anyone watching will be the sheer pace of the game. It will
be very, very quick.”
