Fergie: We were right
GETTING rid of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Thierry Henry has played its part in the
stunning form of United and Arsenal this season.
Sir Alex Ferguson believes the "bold" decisions by himself and his rival Arsene
Wenger in allowing two of the world's top strikers to leave, have been vindicated.
Van Nistelrooy was allowed to join Real Madrid last year despite racking up record
goalscoring figures of 150 goals in 219 appearances for United, to the shock of
many fans.
And many Gooners were stunned when Henry, for most of his eight-year career
an iconic figure with 226 goals in 369 games, was allowed to join Barcelona.
But Ferguson feels that time was up for both players, and that the ability to make
such tough calls was something which united him with his old, and occasionally
bitter, rival Wenger.
After initial phases of missing the two players, United have kicked on since losing
van Nistelrooy, and Arsenal have flourished without Henry, to the point where
they are one and two in the Premier League and both going strongly in the
Champions League so far this season. Ferguson says: "I think Henry had spent
his time at Arsenal and they did the correct thing in letting him go.
"Whether that has liberated some of their players or not, I have no real
knowledge, but I do think Arsene Wenger did the right thing.
"It was time for him to move on.
"Henry was probably the most important individual in that Arsenal team of the
last few years but there is always a time when you have to change. Managing a
team is very difficult and there comes a time when you have to make these
crucial and bold decisions. I felt Arsene would sell Henry last season."
