Louis Saha: Have The Facts Changed?

Louis Saha will move to centre stage as United seek an instant remedy to the
loss of Wayne Rooney.

Sir Alex, acknowledging the truth about his fragile forward, admitted that he
preferred to use the player as a substitute and impact performer. The manager
no longer has that luxury. All were on United and on Saha against Blackburn and
will be in the coming weeks with two questions uppermost in the
mind:

Can United score regularly without Rooney ?

Will Saha’s fitness hold up to the rigours of the Premiership ?

The record books give strong clues as to the answer. Saha has started 67 games
in three years for United, a pitiful record which should have earned the player the
sack. Saha however has been indulged because when fit, he makes United a
more threatening proposition up front. The Emirates Stadium cameo last week
was proof enough.

Now, with United’s best striker on the sidelines, expressions of confidence will be
once again aimed at Saha in the hope of seeing him through the four weeks of
Rooney’s convalescence. Fans will be invited to believe anew in Louis Saha as
sturdy first team material. A goal or two would boost the reassessment of the
player’s worth to Ferguson’s side.

But after so many false dawns, how strong is the belief in Saha now?

Undoubtedly, the Frenchman is an excellent player but his constant battle
against injury means he cannot be trusted. Topping the bill for 15 minutes
against Arsenal is not good enough for an international striker aged 29 employed
by a club chasing the highest honours. Fergie may sing his praises in public but
he is as aware of this central truth about his striker as any observer.

“I change my mind when the facts change,” the famed economist John Maynard
Keynes replied to a questioner. “What do you do Sir?”

For this fan at least, the facts are unlikely to change for Louis Saha.
