Sir Bobby Backs Under-Fire McClaren
Under-fire boss Steve McClaren just needs "a bit of luck" to win round his
detractors, according to England's all-time record goal scorer Sir Bobby Charlton.
McClaren's future has come to the spotlight in the wake of his men's 2-1 defeat in
Russia last month which has taken their Euro 2008 qualification hopes out of
their own hands.
England must beat Croatia at Wembley next Wednesday and hope either Slaven
Bilic's Group E leaders lose in Macedonia or Russia slip up in either Israel or
Andorra.
It remains to be seen whether Football Association officials will keep faith with
McClaren for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign should England fail to
reach next summer's European Championship finals in Austria and Switzerland.
But Sir Alex Ferguson's former number two has found an ally in Manchester United
legend Charlton, who said: "He is under immense pressure from the media. It's
the media more than anything else.
"The Football Association say Steve McClaren is the manager for a while. Ask
football people who else would you get. He's good at his job really. He just
needs a bit of luck and everyone will think Steve McClaren is the best thing since
sliced bread."
Charlton, who is refusing to give up on England's chances of playing in the Euro
2008 finals, thinks that "maybe it is about time the players took a bit of
responsibility".
He added: "The England manager's job is so high profile. Maybe you need a bit of
luck - support from the players, the FA, people in the game generally. Let's give
him a chance."
