Reds make it a treble celebration

SIR Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton were honoured at the first North West
Football Awards in Manchester on Monday night.

But the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs were surprisingly overlooked in
the Premiership Player of the Year category.

Everton's Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta scooped the award at the star-studded
ceremony at the Midland Hotel.

However, it was a treble Old Trafford celebration as Sir Bobby picked up a Lifetime
Achievement Award, Sir Alex was voted Manager of the Year ahead of Rafa
Benitez and Mark Hughes while United were crowned Overall Club of the Year.

There was a double for Stockport County skipper Ashley Williams. He pipped
Bury's Andy Bishop and Glenn Murray of Rochdale for League Two Player of the
Year and then followed up by collecting the North West Player of the Year title for
his contribution to football on and off the pitch.

The awards also recognised the people behind the scenes and the clubs'
commitment to their local areas.

Revenues

Indeed, the 26 professional football clubs in the region have a combined turnover
approaching £600m and this figure is rising rapidly as commercial revenues from
broadcasters and other sources keep growing.

The industry is widely recognized as playing a key role in the region's economy in
terms of tourism, employment and wealth creation. In addition to United's
collective victory, Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City shared the honours for
Community Club of the Year.

The north west office of business advisory firm Deloitte was presented with the
coveted North West Business Award in recognition of its dedication to the
region's clubs.

All proceeds from the event went to the New Children's Hospital Appeal of which
Everton and ex-Red Phil Neville is the patron.

"We are aiming to raise £20m to support projects within the hospital," said
Neville. "So, we're pleased to be supporting the NWFA, as the dinner brings
together the cream of the north west's footballing and business community."

PFA chairman Gordon Taylor, who was among the judges, said: "It was great to
see the north west's footballing community come out in force to celebrate the
region's success both on the pitch and behind the scenes, as well as raising a
huge amount of money for a fantastic local charity.

"The north west is at the beating heart of football and the fans have really got
behind their teams - more than 20,000 voted for our top players and managers.

We're already planning next year's awards in anticipation of another triumphant
season for the region's teams." www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk
