Any one else go to the gym regularly. I've been going for about a year but only started taking it really seriously the last 2 weeks. How long does it take to get really buffed up? Should i start taking protein suppliments?

I usually start off doing some machines, do about 3/4 reps of situps. Until i ache.
Sometimes some chin ups. Two reps of 12 pull ups.

Free weights i do some curls at about 16kg about 12 reps x3.
Do some other stuff with the free weights like triceps.
Lifting about 70kg on the machines for certain things.

I want to get a body like this
http://www.justworkout.co.nz/images/150-guymeasure.gif
At the moment it just seems like all work and little results.

I do about a 3km run every two days and hit the weights when i'm not running. This week i've been to the gym 7 times and well whilst i feel strong, i guess my appearance hasn't changed too much. Any other gym goers got advice then? Some people in my gym are properly stacked n i'm just wondering if they were born like that cos i've been working damn hard for a while now and don't seem to be getting anywhere.

I'm have to take a break for 5 days now which is annoying but i guess my body could use the break. How often should i be going etc.

Someone must have some pointers...

Depends on what your after if you want to build muscle mass don't use the machine and use free weights, also concentrate on more specialist lifts.
Also some people do use steroids so every huge person you see might not be all they seem.
I would look up a more specific page on the net about it with people who do this either for a living or are serious athlete's if you want to get a body like the picture.

You say don't use machines, whats wrong with the machines?

I do use free weights, not that much though.

I prefer to concentrate on press ups, chin ups and sit ups mainly for that sort of exercise. Though i do use the bench and curls from time to time.

Machines are designed to help you and are not as effective, things such as bench and shoulder press should be done with freeweight's and if you want to build muscle you sould also be doing things like squats and deadlifts.

I joined 2 months ago or so, and have been trying to go 2/3 times a week, was meant to go last night but am injured. I do legs in one session, my legs are very strong thanks to all the football I play etc, so I need to increase much more on the weights next time I am not injured...

I have felt a difference in myself since I've been going, I am naturally very skinny and well, fairly weak in the upper body, so it's easy to see that I'm improving. Free weights are good for stabilising etc

if you want to bulk up you need to be lifting heavy weights with less reps, take in plenty of carbs and protien, make sure you have at least 48 hours rest before training. and cut down on your runs your doing to much cardio. when doing your sessions concentrate on 2 parts of your body at a time in 1 workout ;ie; biceps and triceps, shoulders and back and so on.

also buy your self some supplements the best one i can advise is creatine which supplys energy to your muscle and nerve cells. it's totally safe it's organic and can be bought from hollands and barret and even ebay, this will help you bulk up

if you want to be toned you need to be doing more reps with less weights and plenty of cardio

ONE LAST WORD ON THIS SUBJECT WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT TAKE STERIODS they are very dangerous and can even kill, i knew a 21 year old lad who had a heart attack and lad in his early 20s have serious kidney problems through them.

many people who want to be big have them for a quick fix but if your serious and dedicated enough you will see the results in about six months just through hard work

good luck!

I heard to have the perfect body you have to do a certain amount of running. A 3k run isn't very much at all if i do it twice / three times a week.

I often work most body areas in a gym session. If i focus on one area i find that i get knackered in that area and only last in the gym for about 30 minutes.

I used to take Creatine in pills. I didn't notice much positive effects from it. I had to take 3 before the gym and 3 afterwards. Also it did some funny stuff to my hair. I seem to be growing hair faster... I don't think its a safe thing to take. Thats talking from experience.

I'm going to buy a protein shake and start eating more eggs i think.

Just need to stay committed i suppose and use more free weights and a little less running. Less machines as well i think.

I can tell you just this:
Listen to your body - if you feel tired (before exercising), don't exercise.
Don't overeat yourself - eat more often (5 times a day), but smaller portions.
Don't eat by the time you go to bed.
Go to the gym !max.! 3 times a week
When you exercise, think of what you are doing.

Do not take steroids.

I got myself a personal trainer a couple of years ago but he was total *******. He'd make me run/cycle until I could barely stand and made me lift weights until I was too weak to even fasten my trousers! After 8 weeks of this I found out he hadn't finished his qualifications yet so shouldn't have been training me! I dumped him immediately.

I now work out at home. I bought my own exercise bike and my own set of weights. I cycle 10km 4-6 times per week and lift weights 2-3 times per week now. When I first started I cycled 5km and was lifting weights every day. After a couple of months I felt myself getting fitter - which is why I increased the cycling distance - and my muscles started getting bigger - which is why I reduced the number of times I lifted weights.

I'm not looking to turn myself into a beefcake though - I just want to be fit and healthy i.e. not be knackered running for the bus! :D

I suggest you consult the staff at your gym, explain what you want to do, have a fitness assessment and ask for a fitness regime - if you're worried about sticking to it get a personal trainer but MAKE SURE THEY ARE FULLY QUALIFIED!!!

meh...with a name like Richard what do ya expect.....:D

Here is my bedroom regime......and i'd consider myself a heavy.....;)

30 reps of biceps and triceps on each arm with 1.5 kg dumbells.....tried 50 but even for me..it was too much..

35 push-ups....50 and i start to hurt my back.....ouch....

push-ups......don't even bother...i tried one and fell flat on my face...ouch again...

and i also do other small excercises with my 0.5 kg.....all over body toning....

I've noticed significant results in the past few months since I started my intensive regime.....

I'd reccommend advice from a doctor before undergoing this exact regime as it can be tough both mentally and especially physically...

If you want any info on my regime don't hesitate to pm.....

Trust me it works......after 2 weeks I was carrying my schoolbag on one shoulder.....yes you heard me one shoulder...

K4t...copyright....lol.....:o

I go to the gym maybe 3 times a week and i don't use anything. I tried Creatine but it gave me side affects. It made me more hairy so i've 100% stopped using it now. Plus i've only recently started focusing on weights.
You know any other decent suppliments?
Completely stopped cardio and i bench about 85kg. Which is definitly not bad at all.
I don't believe you bench 140kg.
Curls 32kg? I'd like to see you do it.
I don't see anyone in my gym get close to 32kg for curls or 140kg on the bench.
I got a feeling your talking out of your arse.

Anyway i'm happy with my progress at the moment.

Other supplements if you want build go for weight gain but you have to go gym alot more to burn it to muscle

Do you mean where did i get the creatine? Just a normal health shop. Can't remember the name but they are a fairly reliable retailer. Just disagreed with my body.

I got some protein shake actually but i always forget to use it.

Yeah it takes absolutely ages to improve. Commitment and determination. Good diet helps as well. My diet is terrible.

I have been going to the gym for a while now only and hence no expert to advise you. But my Personal Trainer is the best trainer in my gym. So I am just going to tell you what he told me. Not a bad deal for you, eh? I have to pay $75 an hour for it.

1. On the contrary to most belief, gym workouts only contribute 30% to your growth! 60% is from how you eat and rest and the other 10% is your lifestyle. If you are committed and train very hard but don't eat properly or enough to feed your body or rest enough for your body to recover, it is going to be very hard to grow! Think about it, it makes complete sense. Recommended minimum amount of sleep is 7 hours. And "how you eat determines how big you are". So basically the science of it is this: train hard to break down the muscle tissues (that's why you feel the aches), feed it well and rest well for it to 'rebuild' and recover to grow bigger and stronger.

2. I am a hard gainer so I don't know if the supplements recommended to me applies to you. You probably have to fine tune a bit. Mass builder (ProLab N2) before breakfast and immediately after workouts and protein drinks (Champion Pure Whey) in between meals and before sleep. My trainer takes 20 hard boiled egg white a day in between meals.

3. It is a mistake to stop cardio completely if you are afraid it may retard your growth. On the contrary again, you need to do cardio to burn fats and for fitness/endurance so that you can recover faster in between sets and thus can do heavier and more workouts!

4. I was also told that a washboard stomach does not come from crunches or sit ups alone but mainly from dieting. The exercises only strength and shape your stomach muscles but if there are fats covering it, it just can't be visible. Lol. So your cardio to burn fats, the stomach exercises and abstaining from eating fatty and oily food must all go hand in hand.

5. And it is not how heavy you do too for "heavy" itself is relative to different people. It is how intense you actually work your muscles, the correct form and proper techniques of doing it to prevent injury and for maximum effect.

Hope it clears some myths and that you will find it helpful. :)

Make sure you do the weights or machine/free hand work before you do your cardio/running exercises because the last thing you would want to do is run around and then be too tired to lift a weight.

Too much of anything is NOT good! Make sure you take breaks like for e.g. what I do is Monday and Tuesday training/gym and then Wednesday break from all sports (maybe sometimes I play Futsal but then I take Tuesday or Thursday off). Then I do gym/training on Thursday and take Friday off then again on Saturday and then Sunday off. Overdoing it will not help you at all but instead it will work against you. After you work out your muscle aches and your muscle needs time to repair and build itself before the next workout hence the rest is needed.

Protein shakes do help as far as I have seen and I would recommend them to you. Just stay out of steroids!! And another thing is also vary your routine. Don’t just stick to one routine like e.g. say one day you run for 3 km and another you can bike for 3 km and yeah then you can row another day (you know on those rowing machines in the gym) and just vary it because your body will predict it if you use the same old routine day in and day out and I have heard it doesn’t get you much results and also make sure you stretch a lot because the last thing we would want is for you to get injuries or cramps.

Also another tip I have heard is not to do too much in one day. Make a schedule and allocate specific times and days on which you will work out and just focus on one thing at a time/day. For e.g. Monday you are going to go gym after work and you decided you will only work on your arms. Only do weights or machine work on your arms and take some protein shake before and after and during it. Then Tuesday just on chest. Thursday work just on back/shoulders. Saturday just cardio work out and so on. That way it’s balanced and if you do all that in one day you will get over worked and tired and the protein will spread out instead of just centralizing it to one part and you won’t see much change.

How do I know? I am only 17 lol! Well I have trained karate for like 8 years now and have a black belt in one style and a blue belt with a yellow stripe in another and I also trained outdoor soccer for a while and have also trained in Futsal/indoor soccer and street soccer and also play other sports for fun like tennis, swimming, running, volleyball and handball and I am quite small and skinny and my karate trainer wanted me to put on some more weight/lean mass and muscle so told me some of the tips I told you above and I have gained 10 kgs of lean muscle since and my goal is to gain another 10 and I will be my ideal weight and size but I put it on hold for my year 12 studies so after year 12 I will start working out again. I hope I have helped!

i can lift 20 stones no problem . i do it every time i get out of my chair .

washboard abs are all fine and good but they wont stop a bullet will they and where do you rest your plate of chips ?

and when you get to my age the last thing you want is ladies pestering you all the time for sex .

take my advice ditch the protien shakes and make the pukka pie your pal . only drawback i can see so far is i have to wipe front to back due to backfat getting in way

My weekly routine.....

Go to school from 9 - 4, head to the local gym (right beside my school). Spend 2
hours there with my mate, 1hr 30min in the gym, and 30min in the pool. Home
round 6.

Repat on the weekdays that I've got school. Great way to relieve stress, that
swim in the pool! ;)

Mainly concentrate on my,

Quads
Abs
Triceps
Back

Follow a set program, given to me by this guy called Pat, who spent a year with
the United yout teams developing techiques and learning. Top guy.

Try to eat healthy too, but that goes off course at times.......

During the coming summer I hope to spend longer in the gym, as next year will be
the year where I either make it at Gaelic Football, or not.

And remember, like I always say......

............Biceps are just for show.....It's all about the triceps! ;)

Eating well is key and get out and excercise even if its for a walk.
playing sports is by far the most fun you can have excercising. :)
We all love this football team, most of you must play surely to some capacity?
