JOEL'S PLEDGE TO FANS
Joel Glazer last night broke his Old Trafford silence by insisting: We're here for the
long term!
And the mega-rich American says the Glazers will back Fergie all the way in
Manchester United's quest for glory at home and abroad.
The family dug deep to find the summer millions that secured the signatures of
Nani, Anderson, Carlos Tevez and Owen Hargreaves.
And Joel said: "Sir Alex Ferguson will be given all the resources to compete at the
highest possible level.
"When you're around this club, following this club, the heritage, the history -
when you're walking around Old Trafford, it's an incredible feeling.
But with it comes a lot of responsibility, and we take that very seriously.
"Manchester United are one of the very few truly global sports teams in the world.
"We have a global fan base of 140 million. It's the only club we were ever
interested in."
Joel's billionaire sports tycoon dad, Malcolm, splashed out £790million to take
control of United in 2005. But the deal, which relied heavily on borrowed money,
was panned by some United fans who feared the family were interested only in
making a fast buck.
The Glazers also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL team - and Joel believes the
US could learn a lot from football in this country.
He is sure that David Beckham can help the sport grow in the US.
Joel added: "Beckham has helped to heighten awareness. It's now about being
patient. How big can it get? I don't know but the US clearly has a passion for the
game as well."www.thepeople.co.uk
