Fletcher leads Scotland tributes
Darren Fletcher revealed how the Scotland players went back out on to the pitch
to acknowledge the Tartan Army's roar of approval even though their Euro 2008
quest had just ended in tears.
Sitting in the dressing room, the Manchester United midfielder and his team
-mates were distraught after being sunk by a 90th-minute goal from Christian
Panucci.
Understandably, all the Scotland players, along with Alex McLeish and his
backroom staff, were hurting like hell, but when the news filtered through that
their supporters were still singing in the rain, his fellow gladiators knew they had
to return to the pitch and salute the people who them so much backing.
Fletcher said: "We could not believe it when we got back to the dressing room
and heard most of the were still in the stadium. So we had to go out and show
our appreciation. I think they respect the fight and passion we showed today, it's
good to see they are behind us and it gives us great confidence for the next
campaign.
"The loss is hard to take because of the way we played, we had them on the
ropes, they resorted to long balls and we were camped in their half in the second
half. We really put them under a lot of pressure."
After the match McLeish told the players he was proud of them and Fletcher
said: "Things stay in the dressing room, but he was proud of us and what we
achieved, although the whole disappointment factor was still there because we
played the world champions at Hampden and we have come in disappointed
because we know we could have quite easily won bar some silly mistakes and
refereeing decisions."www.themirror.co.uk
