Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez are expected to play after serving their countries in midweek but Wayne Rooney - scorer of five goals against Bolton last season - is still recovering from an ankle injury. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thrilled that all three are on FIFA’s shortlist to be named World Player of the Year on 17 December.
“I’m delighted that the three of them have been nominated,” says Sir Alex Ferguson. “The season Ronaldo had last time around was unbelievable stuff. Carlos Tevez was immense for West Ham too and he was a key figure in them staying up. Then there’s Wayne, who, towards the end of the season especially, was absolutely flying for us, banging in the goals.”
Ronaldo and Tevez also banged in goals against the Trotters last term - the latter scored two for West Ham - and Sir Alex will hope for more of the same this Saturday.
“If Tevez loses the ball there’s no stopping him until he wins it back. It’s a fantastic trait. If you complement ability with hunger, then you have something very special.
“I think it (the FIFA nominations) sums up the optimism of this club’s future that has young players starting to emerge with great ability and desire."
