Fergie's a fan of Anelka
Bolton may sell and Fergie admits he's huge fan
Sir Alex Ferguson last night revealed his enduring admiration for Nicolas Anelka
and was then told the Bolton striker will be available in the transfer window.
The Manchester United boss is looking for a striker in the January window, with
first-choice frontmen Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez playing so many games,
and doubts over the long-term fitness of Louis Saha.
And Fergie, who admitted to trying to buy Anelka in the past, may just finally land
the £12million-rated Frenchman to ease his options up front after several failed
attempts to sign him.
United take on Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium today and Bolton boss Gary
Megson admitted the club are ready to cash in on Anelka when the window re
-opens.
Anelka came close to quitting Bolton in the summer before signing a new £60,000
-a-week contract.
But United - who enquired about him in the summer - have been alerted to his
newfound availability.
Fergie said: "I've tried to buy Anelka several times because he's a very talented
player. You always assess players with pace and an ability to score, and he
comes into that category.
"But for a variety of reasons it didn't happen. Sam Allardyce showed faith in him
when he signed him for Bolton, because by then he'd been round a few clubs."
Megson admitted Anelka leaving in January was highly likely to help fund the
necessary rebuilding of his Bolton squad, with Villarreal striker Jon Dahl
Tomasson lined-up as his replacement.
"I'll deal with anything that comes along in the future, but I know Nicolas Anelka's
name is always going to get mentioned with other clubs," said Megson.
"That tells you everything about the quality he's got. He's a wonderful player for
us and my job is to try and get the best out of him while he's here.
"Hopefully that will be a long time, but you don't know what's around the corner."
Anelka, Bolton's top scorer with six goals, returns from his thigh injury for today's
clash with United, and Megson admitted his preconceived ideas about the man
dubbed 'Le Sulk' were wrong.
"I've been pleasantly surprised with him," said Megson.
"I did have a perception of what he might be like, but when I met him he was
nothing like that.
"He's polite, he's not one of the louder ones in the dressing-room, but he trains
well, looks after himself and knows exactly what he wants."
Megson is still looking for his first win as manager of relegation-threatened
Wanderers and knows that will be a huge ask against inform United, who top the
table level on points with Arsenal.
And he picked out veteran winger Ryan Giggs as his favourite United player and
revealed his enduring respect for the 33-year-old.
"Everyone admires Cristiano Ronaldo, but I also have a lot of admiration for Giggs
because he was a Ronaldo when he first broke on to the stage," said Megson.
"He's still doing it all these years on.
"He's the consummate professional, handles himself superbly and still has the
ability he had when he made his debut at the age of 17."
