Veloso The Latest Portuguese Bound For United
Manchester United are poised to add to their pool of youthful Portuguese talent
by bringing Sporting Lisbon's exciting midfielder Miguel Veloso to the club.
Sporting, who travel to Old Trafford for a Champions League meeting next
Tuesday, have already nurtured the prodigious talents of both Cristiano Ronaldo
and Nani and United are confident that a long standing relationship with the club
will help them win the player's signature ahead of interest from Real Madrid.
Miguel Veloso is the subject of a £10 million move by Manchester United
Veloso is a holding midfield player who is adaptable enough to have also featured
successfully at left-back and centre-back and his versatility appeals to Sir Alex
Ferguson, as, with Mikael Silvestre out with a long-term knee injury, he has only
one left-footed player, Patrice Evra, who is a recognised full-back.
The 21-year-old has already broken in to the Portuguese national team and
received glowing reports including a Champions League match against Inter
Milan where he dominated Patrick Vieira.
Ferguson was alerted to Veloso by his assistant Carlos Queiroz and the player
has been watched all season.
Ferguson's brother and chief scout, Martin, has been a regular at the Estadio Jose
Alvalade XI this season. United have been represented at all but one of Veloso's
last seven matches.
Sporting maintain that they want to hold on to their leading players but it is
believed that talks about a move to United have already started at some level
and the player has been informed that should a sizeable offer be received then
he will be allowed to leave the club.
A figure of £10 million would be enough for United to bring the player to England
but should Madrid, or any number of European clubs who have been monitoring
Veloso's progress, become involved that amount could easily rise.
Veloso was a member of Benfica's youth set-up until he moved to Sporting aged
14 and he comes from a footballing family with his father Antonio a former
defender for the national side.
