Tomasz Kuszczak has admitted culpability for Sporting Lisbon's goal in Tuesday's Champions League clash at Old Trafford.
Sporting defender Abel put the visitors ahead with a speculative shot from long range which flew inside Kuszczak's near post, and the Pole admits he thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for sparing his blushes with United's late winner.
"I'm happy we won the game, that was the most important thing and it helps me feel better after my mistake," Tomasz told MUTV. "I ran to Ronaldo after the game. I was happy for him and especially for me because we won.
"It was my first mistake at Manchester United and I hope it's the last one. Sometimes things happen which you don't expect but that's football."
Despite being Sir Alex Ferguson's second-choice goalkeeper, Kuszczak has appeared in four of the Reds' first five Champions League games this season, and he is relishing the experience.
"We have won all five games and I have played in about three and a half," he said. "It's a great experience for me.
"It was an interesting game tonight because after losing the first half, we had to push ourselves to win the game."

He is a quality goal-keeper imho and could well be a viable long-term replacement for VDS.......In every match I have seen him play he has made fantastic saves and looked safe nearly all the time...
Last nights goal was a complete fluke and he was desperately unlucky...
He does seem a bit hesitant at times at corner kicks and low crosses..........
But with more first team chances and experience he will become more competent at dealing with them.....
(if there are any spelling mistakes it is because the song "Danny Boy" is being sang in an awful dublin accent..........:cringe:......)

I don't blame Kuszczak because I don't think it was meant as a shot! Abel was surprised himself when that goal went in, he didn't race off celebrating like he tried the shot and scored It was a complete fluke. It wasn't a mistake by Kuszczak!

Watch the goal again..........closely........
He looked up......and then hit it with the OUTSIDE of his right foot !!
Would you do that from the right side of the field if it was meant as a cross ?
No......
Very good goal I say........
Tomas went too far from his goal line - naughty boy :p

Yeah, you can hit the ball with the outside of your boot to swing it in. You get more curl and spin! I use the techniques to cross sometimes when I play. I have seen Rooney do it! It takes practice but you can do it!
Then another player can run in and finish. That one just had good power and curl and creped past Kuszczak. He looked up ....... and ... loads of players do that to pass and to shoot!

From the right side of the field - as Abel was......you would NOT use the outside of your foot - this would curl the ball into the goalkeeper......not ideal really.
From the right wing you would wrap your foot around the ball and curl it AWAY from the keeper.
Abel hit it from the right and with the outside of his foot - he meant to curl it into the net - Tomas was too far out - hence the full length dive from him trying to get back to the goal line.......

I've seen Ronaldo sneak in a free-kick from that sort of angle but never from open play. In that sense, it was a bit flukey but I don't blame TK. His could have positioned himself closer to the near post but you never expect someone to shoot from there.

I've seen VDS mess up plenty of times, or at least, he could have done better. TC is doing fine for us really. Anyone who complains about his performances needs to watch some other keepers. He don't even play regularly and has been composed for us. I rate him.

I agree RR ! One what maybe ranked as a mistake does no define him as a keeper!
He is still a very good keeper! I hope he serves United for many more years!

And this is the point where the thread now wonders off in some kind of parallel world and turns into a war as one side accuses the other of calling TK a useless keeper, lmao :D
Remember the thread is all about TK admitting HE made a mistake......:p

Like I said to Jazz in his thread people get confused after 10 or so replies and start accusing people of saying things they never said, lmao........
You say it was no mistake but TK admits it was !!!

Both are great keepers, as is Ben Foster, I have a suspicion he may be the 2nd choice goalie when he recovers from injury. I think we should have signed Jaaskelainen years ago though!

I still think it was a fluke.........
He was being closed down by Evra and he just whacked it as hard as he could......

Kuzchak is a top goalkeeper and whenevr I see him play he has been fantastic for us......
He made one mistake last night and was unfortunate that it was punished by a fluke shot....
He's a great keeper and hopefully if given more first team chances this season, you will see that....

Nice to see these opinions :) Kuszczak is young keeper but very ambitious, and he'll play better and better. Ferguson gives him a lot of chances to play and for example during match with Arsenal when VDS was injured, Kuszczak played great match.
I'm amble to our gate in future :)

Exactly, he was fantastic. You are very lucky, for Poland to have great keepers - Boruc, Kuszczak and Dudek was in his time too! Not to forget Fabianski!

Yes, it's true, we've a lot of good keepers. Maybe You don't believe me but we haven't keepers school in Poland, often speaking about great polish keepers school but this school no to exist :)
By the way... It's problem for Kuszczak- he want play in polish representation but number one for Leo is Boruc.

One of my mates is Polish and he is a great keeper. Just seems to be naturals with the polish! Maybe your coaching staff should give certain English keepers a few lessons. Looks like Robinson, James and Carson could sometimes do with it! :D
Keeper academies would be great even if they don't exist, someone should start one! The keepers you could produce! wow!
