Ryan Giggs feels Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney is being victimised by referees.
Rooney must serve a three-game ban after The Football Association rejected his appeal against his red card in a pre-season friendly against Porto.
The young striker was dismissed during the Amsterdam Tournament after catching Porto defender Pepe in the face, although the contact appeared to be accidental.
Nevertheless, The FA stood by Dutch referee Ruud Bossen's decision, meaning Rooney will miss Premiership games against Charlton, Watford and Tottenham.
Following on from his sending off for England in the World Cup, some people have speculated that the 20-year-old is a prize name for referees to take.
Giggs is also in that corner and believes his United colleague is becoming an easy target for officials.
"Generally, Wayne has handled himself brilliantly," said Giggs.
"At such a young age, the spotlight is on him, but he has handled that more than appropriately.
"But, on occasions like this, when the referee is trying to make a name for himself, it is disappointing."
Paul Scholes will also sit out three games for picking up a red card against Porto and Giggs accepts the midfielder, along with Rooney, will be missed by The Red Devils.
He added: "Losing both Wayne and Paul is a real problem.
"But we have got a big enough squad to cope and we just have to deal with it."
