Wes Brown has backed Sir Alex Ferguson's claim that the current
Manchester United squad can only class themselves as great when they become
serial trophy winners.

Ferguson has already stated his belief that his present group of Red Devils is
better than any squad he has had throughout his 21 illustrious years at Old
Trafford.

But the Scot has also warned it is what they win, rather than how good they look,
which will be the true test of their ability.

Having clinched a first Premier League title in four years last term, United started
in the right manner, even if they lost out to AC Milan in the semi-finals of the
Champions League and were beaten by Chelsea in a drab FA Cup final.

But, after the surprise loss at Bolton last weekend, the pressure is on United to
get a win over Fulham on Monday to re-establish their championship credentials.

"This is a big season for us," said Brown.

"We definitely have a good squad with great ability but you can only call it a great
squad when you win trophies.

"We are capable of it but we have to do it.

"Things have been going well. We are playing good football, we are defending
well, not letting in many goals and, attacking-wise, we are up with the very best
in the country.

"When everyone is fit, it will be very hard for the manager to pick a team and
hopefully, when the crunch comes at the end of the season, we will be in line to
win as many trophies as possible."

Although a two-month unbeaten run came to an end at Bolton, United have made
light of a lengthy injury list, of which Brown has been one of the major
beneficiaries.

With skipper Gary Neville sidelined since March, the England international has
been a virtual ever-present at right-back this season.

For a player who has become so accustomed to filling in when required, it has
been a refreshing change for Brown to spend so much time in one position.

"It has been a lot easier in that sense," he said.

"You get used to doing one job and you understand it more."

Brown has also been able to show off some previously unseen attacking instincts,
although he freely admits he is very much a support player to the main man on
United's right-flank, FIFA world player of the year contender Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I just try to get involved a bit and help out," he laughed.

"It is quite enjoyable but basically I know I just need to be there in case Ronny
can't take everyone on and score."

As one of the England squad members who suffered the heartbreak of a loss to
Croatia at Wembley last month that put paid to their hopes of reaching Euro 200
8, Brown is still in a state of shock.

The Longsight-born star, once described by Ferguson as the most natural
defender he had ever worked with, believes it will only be when the action starts
in Austria and Switzerland next summer that England's disastrous qualifying
campaign will really sink in.

But for now, he is concentrating on aiding United's quest for Premier League
points, secure in the knowledge a top seeding in the Champions League
knockout draw has been achieved with one game to spare.

"What happened with England was very disappointing," he reflected.

"I am pretty sure I will be able to block it out until the tournament starts and but
then it will all come back again.

"Club-wise, you just have to get on with it.

"England is done now and I have to forget about it.

"The situation at United is completely different. We have to concentrate on now
and make sure we get into a position to win some big trophies."
