The Football Association have denied that Manchester United were drawn against Aston Villa in Sunday's FA Cup third round draw by mistake.

Sharp-eyed viewers claim that Sammy Nelson misread '24' for '25' - meaning Villa were paired with the Premiership champions rather than Middlesbrough - as he made the draw live on television.

Footage has now appeared on YouTube highlighting the apparent error. When Nelson called out '25' later in the draw he had his fingers over the numbering, thus making verification impossible.

The governing body is adamant that the draw was legitimate, insisting that the bright studio light had distorted the numbering.

"It's a number 24 but because there's a line underneath the numbers, at that angle on the film it does look like a 25. It's been verified by our competitions department," a FA spokesperson told The Daily Mail.

"There's no mystery and absolutely no problems with the draw. We can understand how the confusion might have taken place. We can have a look at the ways the balls have been designed but we've never had a problem with them before

Judge for yourself by viewing the footage here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzsSZ2OC_94)

The draw should be like this  ........

I have watched the video above of this seasons third round draw and i agree that it does look like the wrong number was called out so we should be playing Bristol but we have had Aston Villa 4 times in the last 7 years or so now so i dont see this as a problem.

On the other hand while i was watching the draw on youtube i also watched the draw where we got Exeter City and in that draw coincidently number 24 comes out and it does look like a number 25 and nothing was said about this so maybe they...

1. got away with it last time
2. there was no problems and its just that some eagle eyed person spotted it this year and thought it was a mistake (they must of missed the draw last time)

its still inconclusive either way you look at at but i do think it was a mistake and we should have Bristol, come the game though even the Aston Villa fans will wish we had Bristol :D

ther is no way that is 24 ! That's why 4 is written with full connection between the lines to avoid ****-ups... Lighting my ass ! They just wish to cover it up

The only thing that confuses me is that Boro were drawn out after that so how come the mistake wasn't realised then?

Did anyone record the draw live?

Not sure I can trust a video on YouTube.

I heard that another draw previous to that draw went terribly wrong, it was either the Carling cup or the Scottish cup or something but I saw it on TV.

When will they learn not to bring old has-been fags onto the show because they're damn too old to see or even read numbers?

This is shocking

It sure is. Its too ridiculous to be true though or is it??
Im very curious to see what happens now. Can they swap it around and give us Bristol? That would be nice. Im sure the Villa fans are crying murder over this lol

It is disgraceful and poor form from the FA......and Sammy Nelson...lol

However as someone correctly pointed out in a comment on youtube......

We are Manchester United and we don't fear anybody...........we should still go to Villa Park and give them a lesson............:)

You have to play everybody at some stage.......

Looks like 25 to me! United have a great record against Villa anyway, but I suppose you never know!

Pfft, everyone knows it was swamp gas reflecting the light off Venus that created the appearance of the base of the 4 merging with the line under the number to create a 5.

Oh no wait a minute, the BBC and FA have come up with a much more plausible explanation - it was dodgy lighting in the studio.
