Villarreal have told Manchester United their chances of signing Marcos Senna are now over because of their pursuit of Owen Hargreaves.

The Spanish outfit have informed United that the transfer saga has dragged on too long, particularly since the Old Trafford club have since switched their attentions to Bayern Munich's England ace Hargreaves.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig told BBC Sport Online: "They've turned his head without bringing the matter to any conclusion.

"It isn't good for the relations between the clubs because people should behave in a more correct manner.

"The case is now closed. He will stay and we will have to see if he renews his contract or not."

Brazilian-born Spain midfielder Senna, 30, is in the final year of his contract and Villarreal had previously indicated a willingness to sell for the right price.

I was always afraid of this - now instead of having at least one required midfielder, we've just lost the almost dead-certain signing in our pursuit of getting two..... I sure hope the gaffer *still* knows what he's doing.
