Sir Alex Dismayed By Rome Violence Alex Ferguson reacted to reports of five
Manchester United fans stabbed in Rome was exactly the kind of news that he
was hoping to avoid.
After the horrific scenes at the Stadio Olimpico when the two teams last met in
Rome last April, Sir Alex had been hoping for a quiet night as far as off-field
drama is concerned. Sadly, the opposite turned out to be the case - at least not
inside the stadium.
"This is something we hoped would not happen," Ferguson bemoaned.
"We wanted a nice quiet night and to be able to go home with no incident. It is
disappointing that has not happened.
“Obviously, we are not sure of the details but we hope the supporters concerned
will be okay."
So disgusted was Roma coach Luciano Spalletti about the matter that all he could
muster was: "These people are sick."
Italian police confirmed that five Manchester United supporters were stabbed
before kick-off. The fans were taken to hospital but none of them was in a
serious condition, according to a spokeswoman for the British embassy in
