Evra ready for sticky Toffees test

Patrice Evra has warned his team-mates Manchester United's fifth win in six
seasons at Anfield will mean nothing if they do not beat Everton.

After beating Liverpool on Sunday, United now tackle in-form Everton this
weekend looking to maintain their dogged pursuit of Arsenal in the hunt for back
-to-back title triumphs.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always been of the opinion that league positions on
January 1 offer a reasonable guide as to who is likely to be in the championship
shake-up at the end of the season.

From that perspective, Liverpool are now in trouble given they trail their fierce
north-west rivals by nine points and leaders Arsenal by 10.

However, while he accepts United struck a psychological blow with their latest win
at Liverpool, Evra is more concerned the momentum is not lost.

"The result is very positive," said the France international. "Winning at Anfield as
a Manchester United player is the best moment of my career - and, after last
season, it has happened twice now.

"From the psychological side it was excellent. But it was still only worth three
points and now we must forget it and focus on Everton.

"Yes, we have beaten Liverpool but if we lose at home against Everton, the
victory will have been for nothing."

Although Sunday's matchwinner, Carlos Tevez, speaks little English, he could
have been in no doubt how precious his first away goal for United since his
protracted move north from West Ham actually was.

The Argentina forward was in bubbly mood in the visitors' dressing room after the
final whistle, with Evra quick to offer his personal congratulations.

"I just went up to him and said 'Bon Jugador', which means great player,"
revealed the former Monaco star.

"He was very happy afterwards and rightly so."

Yet again, Evra proved he is up there with the very best attacking left-backs in
Europe with a superb display of energy and drive.

He has the attacking instincts of a winger, where he has been used by Ferguson
at times, but is equally aware of his defensive responsibilities judging by his
alertness to clear the danger as a Rio Ferdinand header bounced towards his
own goal after Edwin van der Sar had been flattened by Nemanja Vidic.

And, while he may be the smallest player in the United side, Evra lacks nothing in
toughness, rising to the challenge demanded by Ferguson in his pre-match
rallying cry.

"Before the game, the manager spoke to every player and told them they had to
be ready for the fight," he said.

"He warned us to be ready for the crowd and the pressure of the occasion and
said we had to be strong throughout the team.

"Everyone heeded that message. That is why we won." www.goal.com
