Ronaldo penalty gives Devils delight

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 87th-minute penalty gave Manchester United a 2-1 win over a
dogged Everton side at Old Trafford on Sunday, in a game shown live on Setanta
Sports.

The result brought The Toffees’ 13-game unbeaten run to an end after they had
for so long looked like they would hold out for a point.

Ronaldo gave The Red Devils the lead in the 22nd minute with a sumptuous 25
-yard effort before Tim Cahill restored parity shortly after with a thumping header.

Everton were resistant and defended well, and as they appeared to be heading
for a result Steven Pienaar brought down Ryan Giggs three minutes from time
with a tired and pointless challenge, and Ronaldo slotted home to leave David
Moyes’ side with nothing to show for all their hard work.

It was rough on Pienaar as the midfielder had enjoyed a good game for the
visitors, setting up Cahill's goal and generally causing problems for the home
side, but there could be little argument from the Merseysiders at the decision
from referee Howard Webb.

Wayne Rooney got things off to feisty start with a rash lunge from behind on
Cahill for which he was booked, and after only eight minutes Patrice Evra joined
him in Webb’s book for a late tackle on Tony Hibbert.

Carlos Tevez attempted to get the scoring underway but was off target with an
audacious volley, and the Argentinian striker was unlucky not to give his side the
lead on 10 minutes after Ronaldo’s tenacity down the right provided the former
West Ham man with a near-post chance that Tim Howard foiled.

Joleon Lescott got the better of Danny Simpson to flash a low cross into Tomasz
Kuszczak’s arms with Andy Johnson lurking, and a tasty opening quarter-of-an
-hour was completed with a yellow card for Hibbert who returned Evra’s earlier
attentions with interest as he flew in two-footed on the French full back.

Having kept Ronaldo relatively quiet for the first 20 minutes, a momentary lapse in
defensive discipline allowed the mercurial Portuguese to fire the home side into
the lead.

A dinked pass across the width of the pitch from Tevez found Ronaldo in space,
and the winger took advantage of a lack of closing down to cut inside Lee
Carsley and dip a left-footed shot into the top-left corner from 25 yards to notch
his 15th goal of the season.

The lead lasted just five minutes though as the impressive Pienaar whipped in a
delivery from the left which Cahill rose to direct past Kuszczak with his head,
beating Evra and Nemanja Vidic to the ball in the process to claim his seventh of
the season.

Phil Neville tried to get one over on his former club but a skied shot from the edge
of the area was not worthy of the build up play involving Pienaar, Johnson and
Aiyegbeni Yakubu, and United almost regained the lead through Rooney
moments later.

A delightful ball from Ryan Giggs – effortlessly threaded to Rooney with the
outside of the left boot – allowed the former Everton man to curl a shot over and
around Howard, but Lescott was perfectly placed in the line to head away the
danger.

Ronaldo almost rounded off the first half, and a superb move, with a goal in injury
time but his volley flew marginally over after Giggs’ dinked cross found him 12
yards out.

United started the second half in similar style as Rooney’s cross was sliced clear
by Phil Jagielka, and Tevez had a shot deflected over after a run inside off the left
wing.

The diminutive striker then had an effort saved by Howard as The Red Devils
started to take advantage of Everton’s deep-lying defence, and Joseph Yobo was
on hand to deny Rooney a clear effort on goal as he took the ball off the striker’s
toes after Ronaldo’s pass found his team-mate in the heart of The Toffees’ area.

Michael Carrick was next to try his luck as he drove one over from 20 yards as
Ferguson’s side really started to put the squeeze on their opponents.

Johnson set about reclaiming some of the initiative when he broke and almost
breached the United defence, but the final telling ball was not forthcoming.

Rooney shot inches over when Ronaldo squared a free kick after shaping up to
shoot, and Thomas Gravesen wasted a set piece at the other end on 82 minutes
as Moyes’ men continued to endeavour.

Rooney thumped a venomous effort at Howard which the former United keeper
parried, and the turning point came in 87th minute when United were awarded a
penalty.

Pienaar needlessly flicked out a leg as Giggs glided past him in the area, and
Ronaldo calmly converted, sending Howard the wrong way and claiming all three
points for United. www.setantasport.co.uk
