Now Sky feel the force of Ferguson

Sky Sports have become the latest in a long line of media victims to be banned
from a press conference by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson — so
all powerful at Old Trafford that he even takes on the TV network who bankroll
the Barclays Premier League.

Fergie barred Sky cameras from his preview yesterday for today's game against
Newcastle because of the way the TV station had reacted to his comments about
the lack of home support in the Birmingham match on New Year's Day.

The United overlord was especially annoyed that Sky had included in their
coverage the critical views of the Independent Manchester United Supporters
Association, who described Old Trafford as a 'police state'. The comment was also
picked up by national newspapers.

Sky Sports shrugged off their Fergie ban as being only a temporary measure,
unlike the manager's BBC silence, which has been on-going since a May 2004
documentary about his football links with former agent son Jason.

But the lack of managerial co-operation with TV is such an issue with fans that
there were questions on a Newcastle website yesterday about the sense of
appointing Harry Redknapp when he, like sacked Sam Allardyce, has followed
Fergie's example and doesn't speak to the BBC.

The Premier League say the subject has been softly broached with him but they
received 'a flinty response'. A United spokesman said that the Friday conferences
were a courtesy extended by Ferguson to the media. And on occasions, there
were good reasons for taking it away.

Mad as a Hatter

Former Luton Town chairman Cliff Bassett has withdrawn his bid to buy the club
out of administration after heavy criticism from supporters at his plans to move
the club to a new stadium on the 180 acres of land he owns around Junction 12
of the M1. The fans' beef is that the site would be just outside the Luton address
code, a hard complaint to comprehend when the club are in such dire straits.

Too close for comfort

One issue Newcastle may have to resolve if Harry Redknapp takes charge at St
James' Park is their on-going legal dispute with current Bournemouth boss Kevin
Bond, a close friend of Redknapp. Bond is suing both Newcastle for unfair
dismissal and BBC's Panorama for the allegations in their football bung
documentary which cost him his job.

Wally with a Brolly is off his trolley

Sacked England coach Steve McClaren claims he needed his now infamous
umbrella on the touchline against Croatia so that the notes he was taking
wouldn't get wet. But McClaren was holding a drinks cup in his other hand, which
begs the question how he was going to write in the unseen notebook. With his
expensively straightened teeth?

Defoe's WAG tale

Channel 4's Thursday night programme A Million Pound Place in the Sun will be
worth more than a mention when the definitive social history of the WAG culture
is written. Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe's then fiancee Charlotte Mears
revealed in the show — filmed last August — how he trusted her to spend £1.
8million on a holiday home in Majorca. She 'could see herself living in it' as they
shared the same tastes, while model Mears' mum was measuring the curtains in
the main guest room. Less than three months later Mears had been traded in for
Teddy Sheringham's ex, Danielle Lloyd, and the locks had been changed at
Defoe's £5m Hertfordshire mansion. Defoe can expect a lot of stick in the dressing
room. So can poor Mears in the WAGs' boutiques.

Agents stuck in the middle

The FA are waiting until the end of the January transfer window before reflecting
on how their new agents' regulations have been received. Not very well judging
from one agent's reaction over a £15,000 transfer between a League Two club
and a Championship side that required the middle man's signature in 19 places in
the expanded paperwork. www.dailymail.co.uk
