Late strikes keep United top

Manchester United retained their position on top of the Barclays Premier League
after goals from Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo earned them a 2-0 win at
plucky Reading.

United did not have it all their own way by any means and for a long time it
appeared they would be denied by a combination of poor finishing, excellent
goalkeeping and brave Reading defending.

But with 13 minutes remaining, Rooney latched onto Carlos Tevez's through ball
and directed his first-time shot past Hahnemann, and - as Reading pushed for
the equaliser - Ronaldo broke clear to wrap up the victory.

Reading had refused to be cowed and attacked the visitors throughout the game,
Edwin Van der Sar only getting a weak punch on Stephen Hunt's free-kick and
Kalifa Cisse's low shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Marcus Hahnemann then produced an astonishing diving save from an Owen
Hargreaves free-kick which seemed destined to put United ahead until the
American hurled himself across goal and tipped it wide.

At the other end Van der Sar raced out of his box but scuffed a clearance straight
to Dave Kitson, who struck a 40-yard shot first time only be denied by the
retreating Rio Ferdinand.

There was no drop in pace after the interval as Reading twice pressured Nemanja
Vidic into clearances and Bobby Convey almost picked out Leroy Lita inside the
United box with a neat through ball.

Cisse cleared from under his own bar after the break and after Hahnemann's poor
goal-kick flew straight to Rooney, the England striker failed to capitalise.

But Tevez picked out Rooney in the box and he flicked the ball into the far corner
for the opener.

Then - after James Harper's low strike went agonisingly wide in the final minute -
Ronaldo finishing clinically at the death. www.newsletter.co.uk
