Could United’s Saudi Arabia trip undermine their FA Cup chances against Spurs?
United looked tired against Reading on Saturday and in need of a break.
But instead of putting their feet up for a few days United have gone on four-day
trip to Saudi Arabia for a testimonial game.
And instead of taking their second-string players United have flown out with the
entire first team squad – with the exception of the injured Gary Neville, Paul
Scholes and Louis Saha.
It is estimated the club will generate £1million income from the trip – which also
gives fans in the Middle East a rare chance to see the players.
But is the trip necessary?
Managers are always complaining, particularly at this stage of the season, that
players need a break.
A long-haul trip like this – even if it is with a “warm-weather” training facility could
leave the players more jaded when they return.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson reckons it will do the team good.
"We will have two good training sessions out here on Wednesday and Thursday
in good, warm conditions, so that will definitely be an advantage to us before we
go back to Manchester and we have made a decision to come out here which we
hope will prove right," he said.
"We have gone away before in mid-season and it has worked well for us. We
went to Dubai a couple of years ago and we won the FA Cup at the end of that
season.
"Obviously, if we go back home and get a bad result, then people will say that we
shouldn't have come here, but I'm sure that being here won't do us any harm at
all."
With the Reds facing Spurs in the FA Cup on Sunday, could it be that their
midweek trip might derail the team’s chances of staying in the competition?
