Reds goal machine purring

UNITED'S attack can break through the 50-goal barrier against Spurs next Sunday
in the FA Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo's 23 combined with 12 for Carlos Tevez, ten for Wayne Rooney
and four from Louis Saha, have helped keep United's latest Treble bid alive.

Defender Rio Ferdinand believes the scoring department's ability to shrug off
missed chances is the key to the firepower's success.

Once again at Reading they displayed that characteristic as a bagful of
opportunities failed to halt Ronaldo and Rooney winning the match with two late
goals.

"We had so many chances. It was enough to win two or three games," said Rio.

"It can be disheartening sometimes when you are missing so many chances.

"Frustration can overwhelm some players but we have young players with
experience. They have been in this position for three or four years now and it
doesn't get the better of them.

"We have players who can create eight or nine chances a game. So if you keep
plugging away even if they miss they keep going.

"We don't resort to panicking and playing long balls. They are used to playing
each other in either along the floor or floated in behind defences.

Dividends

"We keep to what we are good at and it pays dividends.

"There is so much determination in this team. You see one of the players miss a
chance and the frustration isn't held back and people know they are frustrated
that they haven't scored.

"But within seconds they are wanting the ball themselves again and are trying to
score or create for someone else.

"It shows the resilience and desire to win games we have."

Reading matched the Reds all the way for sheer hard graft.

"Physically it was probably our hardest game of the season. They worked very
hard and we had to earn our win," added Ferdinand.

"They pressed us all over the park all game. We stood up to that challenge. It
was very demanding."

United, however, flew immediately to Saudi Arabia where they will play Al Hilal at
teatime today in a testimonial.

"We haven't had a midweek game for a little while so the lads are looking forward
to something to do," said Rio.

"It's a change of scenery but we will get some good training as well."

United remain top of the Premier League on goal difference from Arsenal after the
top three won away matches on Saturday.

"It is nice to be on top of the league but trophies aren't given out yet. We have to
keep working hard," Rio added.

"The top three all had hard away games on Saturday and each would have been
expecting one of the others to drop points but we all came through."

Meanwhile, the Daily Star report that Newcastle are keen on taking Michael
Carrick to St James' Park.
