Now Saudis fall under Wayne Rooney's spell

Manchester United's crowd-pulling power was in evidence when they took on Al
Hilal in the Saudi Arabian capital yesterday. Having negotiated the three-lane
traffic jams to reach the King Fahd Stadium, they received a stunning reception
from the home fans, who numbered 65,000 in all.

However, the popularity of Wayne Rooney and United is probably marginally less
than that of Sami Al Jaber, the Saudi forward whose testimonial they were paid
£1 million to play in, and it seemed the referee would do his best to assist
Riyadh's favourite son.

Debatable decisions enabled the home side to go two up through Yasser Al
Qahtane and Al Jaber, with Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo replying. Bader Al
-Kharashi's overhead kick clinched a 3-2 win for Al Hilal, although United debutant
Danny Welbeck missed a penalty in added time.

Ferguson said: "It was a terrific game and the crowd were fantastic, but I didn't
think we were ever going to win! We can have a relaxing day on Tuesday now,
though, and have two good sessions before we return on Thursday."

It's not 65,000 !
It's 70,000 =D
...
I think it was a good game and a nice trip that will refresh our side because the weather there in Saudi Arabia is really good and the facilities there are fantastic and I think the players, staff and the manager will enjoy the trip.
I just think that Saudi Arabia has improved greatly in the last 10-15 years and that shows why they achieved a record 3 time asian cup ( they were 3 times runner-up ), a record 3 time Arab championship winners, a record 4 consecutive world cup qualification and a record 9 time winners of Asian Champions League (clubs). I donnu why there's no Saudi player in the premier league although every year you find a Saudi player in the 3 nominees list competing for the best player award and they won it 3 times in the last 5 years and they were runner-up 1 time !
I just hope owr players return back fresh and ready to compete in three fronts.

Regionally they are the best in Asia. At least they got 8-0 not 10-1 ( South Korea ) :p
You mentioned the bad things but, you forgot to mention the good things : defeating belgium 1-0 ( World Cup ), Ghana 5-0, Egypt 5-1, USA 3-0, 1-0 Australia ( Confederations Cup ).
They entered the Asian Cup 6 times ( reached the final match 5 times and won it in 3 of them ) I think it reflects the great improvement of Saudi football.
you are australian and u already know how good is Saudi Arabia and how they improved greatly.

Rooney and Ronnie seem to be very popular, where ever they go. No wonder Real Madrid want Ronnie. They need someone that will sell shirts for them.

Its a bit off topic but Ill never forget the goal by Al-Olawrain (sp.) in the '94 World Cup.
One of the sweetest World Cup goals ever scored :-)

Yea it was a great goal and really important one that gave Saudi Arabia a qualification to the second round of the world cup.
I'm Saudi but, I have to admit that he was a little bit lucky.
These days football become more tactical than ever and I think if he's still playing he won't score a goal like that :D .
btw Al-Owairan was a good player but he was not a great player.
go to youtube and watch Yasser Al-Qahtani ( Best Asian Player in 2007 ), Sami Al Jaber, Majed Abdullah( u won't find him but he is the greatest player in saudi arabian history, he played in the 80's and the early 90's )

Iraq ...

I don't think Iraq is better than Saudi Arabia. If I am wrong, then prove it
I can tell you why do I think Saudi Arabia is better than Iraq:
1. In the last 5 meetings Saudi Arabia won 3, they drew in 1 and Iraq won 1 match.
2. Saudi Arabia participated 6 times in the Asian cup. They reached the final 5 times out of 6  and won it for a record 3 times, while Iraq only won the competition once .
3. Saudi Arabia reached the Confederations cup's final twice while Iraq didn't even qualified to the tournament :p
4. Saudi Arabia qualified for the world cup 4 consecutive times, while Iraq ( U know ) :D
5. Saudi Arabia won the -17's world cup in 1989  .
6. Saudi Arabian clubs won the Asian Champions League for a record 9 times and participated in the Club World Championship while Iraqi clubs didn't even reach the semi final of the Asian Champions League
7. Saudi Arabia is better hahahaha

There's always some conditions that may influence a match result.. :(
Do you think Greece is better than England, Portugal, France and Germany ? :D
It's all about present and Greece are the holders of the European cup but, that doesn't mean that they are the better team in europe ;)

Thank you.
btw I don't hate Iraq, I really admire them cuz I think what they've achieved in the summer is a great success due to the war and the bad situation they are in even if 90% of their players are playing abroad.
But, also I think that Saudi Arabia is better than Iraq Historically and even at the present and we'll wait and see how they'll do in the World cup's Asian Qualifications.
