Not any more...................
Easy to stop. Just make sure you smoke your last ciggie before going to bed, get up, shower, put stage 3 patch on. Wear for 1 week, put stage 2 on, one week, then stage 3 ...... at this point I forgot to get any and never bothered.

I used to smoke.
I had my first cigarette when I was 16 but didn't really take up smoking until I was 18. I gave up for 3 months when I was 19 and again when I was 22 but then started again.
The last time I had a cigarette was in October 2005. That's 27 months ago and counting.
Giving up was the best and hardest thing I ever did.

Disgusting habit, have you people no will power?
What annoys me though is people who say smokers shouldn't get treated for cancer on the NHS because it's their own fault. They forget that smokers pay an awful lot of tax on those ciggies and if the whole country suddenly gave up smoking, tax for everybody else would go through the roof to plug the gap.

Like a few drags is going to do anything.
It's pretty much proven Alcohol and Tobacco does more damage anyway.
I would put being a tobacco smoker as being worse, and same with someone who drinks an incredible amount of alcohol. So ONE time trying marijuana is hardly idiotic.
What is idiotic though is smoking tobacco for any length of time. ;)

If your dad drinks tell him to stop while he quits smoking because I would only smoke 5/6 day but then I'd go through a pack of 20 when I went out drinking!!!
Different things work for different people though. You can get free advice from the NHS. There are all sorts of patches etc.
One of my mates went to see a hypnotist to stop smoking. He had 3 sessions with her 3 years ago and has never smoked since.
I just stopped tbh. One day I just decided I'd had enough of stinking like an ashtray, being short of breath and spending so much money on ciggies. The first couple of weeks were VERY hard but once you get through those it gets easier.

I don't smoke. Never did, never will. Even if I didn't have asthma, I still wouldn't. And what I hate is how at my University, a lot of people smoke all around campus. It ****es me off because they're giving everybody around them second hand smoke, which is just as bad as actually smoking. So I have to hold my breath sometimes just to get around. I think there's this law that might happen over here that would ban smoking in public places, and I hope it happens.

i smoked fifty a day up to 15 years ago . i watched a programme on bbc2 with a stop smoking guru on . he told his class to light up as soon as he sat down which they all thought odd but they did anyway . he then told them that they were not going to be giving anything up , more puzzled faces he also said they would not suddenly be wealthy either . he then asked them to remember a time before they smoked . he asked them if any troubles in their lives when they didnt smoke they all said yes even one that started at nine . he said they coped then without and could again . he said they would be gaining something not giving up as giving up is equated with failing . he also said never stop to please others . i thought no more about it and went to bed . next day and since i have never wanted a cig . i do not mind others smoking either . may i add i had tried 3 times to give up but ended up on 20 cafe creme a day

I read this thread with great interest and taking it very seriously indeed. No lol matter and no 'smiles' attached.
I am very curious and interested in one particular phenomenon, which I have also heard before but can never imagine it happening to me...
How can a smoker suddenly do not feel like smoking one fine day, out of the blue, don't ask why, don't know why? I read it happened to Jazz and Haggler at least. What actually happened when you 'suddenly don't feel or want to smoke again'?
It happened to my deceased dad too, whom I heard from my mum, was a heavy chain smoker, smoking 5 packets a day. He tried a few times but could not kick the habit. One day, he was hospitalised for some unrelated infection. It was nothing serious and he was discharged 2 days later. The strange thing was, indeed, he suddenly did not feel like smoking again after just 2 days of forced non-smoking in the hospital. Just like that?!? So many years of heavy chain-smoking eliminated over just 2 days?!?
How I wish it could happen to me. How easy and natural it would have been.

I hear what you are saying there, know lots in same situations and hear the same stories off lots of people. But when you talk to them you hear just how difficult they found it.
20 a day smoker here, i have been since i was 13/14, Mrs Sal smokes the same since about the same age. ( NONE of our 4 kids have ever smoked ).
To be honest neither of us has ever tried to give up.
People who say they dont want to be affected by passive smoking i agree with their choice........wonder how many drive cars ? much worse and EVERYONE has no choice but to breath that crap in from the day they are born.
Smoking ban in pubs ? You're having a laugh. I, along with 3 others go outside to have a smoke, what happens ? 8 or 9 non smokers join us and carry on the conversation we're having, and it's the same at every pub.
If everyone stopped smoking tomorrow the whole NHS would be knackered...Millions of £s are paid in taxes by smokers that go into funding the NHS. Without that funding there would be a collapse of the NHS.

No Versa you're not the only smoker, I'm one too. and yes we do pay heavily for something that isn't outlawed and is perfectly legal for us to buy. and I still refuse to quit why because I actually enjoy smoking a cigarette. so I have never tried to quit. been smoking for 15 years now. and even though the stupid ban is now in effect in my city about no smoking in restaurants, bars and other such public places isn't going to make me rethink smoking.

To Grif SA: it's in effect now happened as of Jan. 1st. no smoking in public buildings, restaurants, bars/clubs, and must remain 15 feet from the doors of public buildings. and really you can't tell someone who is paying almost 10 dollars for a pack of cigarettes they can't smoke outside. because now that is ridiculous. and yes I am a smoker.

We have similar laws over here and it's great, it's a shame one of the main reasons alcohol and tobacco isn't outlawed is because of how much money the government et al can make out of it. Whereas Marijuana(safer to be honest) can't be made into billions.

Ajant you can't say that seriously. you cannot say marijuanna is safer. it's toxic burned leaves you are inhaling just as bad. now think of it becoming legalized for real. well they would have to manufacture it the same as cigarettes, so no it's not safer. and you never know what it's laced with when you buy the illegal stuff. and also I wanna see someone who has smoked say 5 joints in under an hour operate like a human being and not forget his/her own name. not possible, but nicotine doesn't impare your motor skills or your judgement for that matter. so again marijuana not the safe alternative. but yes the governments would actually have to, I don't learn how to manage the money they do get, without the easy taxes on cigarettes and alcohol aiding them.

Thousands die every day throughout Europe through breathing/respiratory related diseases can't tell me that lots are not due to breathing in poisons thrown out by traffic.
The point i'm making is no-one has any CHOICE but to breath in exhaust fumes from the day they are born.........Whereas everyone has a CHOICE whether to enter a smoke filled pub or club.
Stand in a bus station for an hour waiting for a bus, then smell your hair and clothes. Nothing that washing your hair and clothes doesn't solve though, same as cig smoke.
Yes i drive, no choice with my job.......** sits back and waits for the usual reply, well you are causing some of the problem then**
The difference being that nearly every person complaining about smokers drives a car but never think about their own polutions by driving. Whereas i do.

Yes i drive, no choice with my job.......
And you see so do thousands and thousands of other people around the world...whereas to actually smoke tobacco and damage your health and others around you IS a CHOICE, and quite an inconsiderate choice especially if you are smoking around non smokers such as children or any human being to be honest. So these individuals do NOT have a CHOICE but to breathe in your smoke. Which is far more threatening than getting a very minute amount of 'poison ridden air'. In my opinion.
Onto your point about choices and going to clubs and pubs that smell like smoke, well why do people who dont smoke have to miss out on certain places because of stinky individuals who are burning their lungs away? Why can't the smokers go somewhere else? Anyway, i believe that's outlawed over here.(smoking in pubs n clubs, or at least inside the premises)
If we want to talk about the environment and/or the treatment of innocent creatures, then surely we can bring up the issue of littering? How many times have you been walking down a street, or across a park and noticed that for every square metre there's at least 5 cigarette butts? How does this impact the environment and safety of young children and animals?
I lost a relative to lung cancer and as far as I'm concerned the only thing that contributed to his death was the amount of cigarettes he smoked per day every day for years and years. None of this car/bus fumes crap. You're a good guy SAL but I think you're doing your upmost to defend smokers and try point out other areas of society which may not be perfect but really don't have great relevance to the topic?
However, yeah I do see your points and agree to an extent. Well, let's see what energy alternative we have to oil in 10 years time....but for now we drive, we have to, and we are exposing outselves to emissions each day but this isn't through choice as you said, but NEITHER is breathing in smoker's air.
