Welbeck hits Red jackpot
DANNY Welbeck's number has come up at United.
The Longsight-born striker has officially been handed his first-team squad number
and will wear the 47 shirt for the Reds for the rest of this season.
It rubber-stamps the step up in status for the 17-year-old Academy product.
Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed recently, after Welbeck had been on
United's mini winter break to Saudi Arabia, that he was promoting the prolific
scorer.
It was something of a bitter-sweet reward because Welbeck was only handed
the new role by Fergie because United's youngsters suffered a shock FA Youth
Cup exit against Carlisle last month.
Welbeck will still be on reserve and academy team duty as well as travelling with
the champions on first team duty, and he aims to bag the goals at lower level to
stay alert and ready for any senior action that may come his way.
"I'm trying to get as many goals as possible," he said. "I scored again for the
under-18s recently and I want to keep on scoring goals."
Welbeck's first team debut came against Al Hilal in the Middle East and despite
missing a last minute penalty in a benefit match the teenager enthused about
the experience.
"It was great," he said. "The players and the coaches were all really welcoming.
They helped me get through it all. The training was so quick, but it was a good
experience.
"It was a shame that I missed the penalty, but I'm over that now. I hope I can be
involved with the first team more often, which can only help me improve as a
player."
