Would you swap Ronaldo for Adebayo ?
Fergie wouldn’t !
Of course he knows Adebayor is a class player - 22 goals in total this season and
he has scored 12 in his last 9 games. But Fergie insists he is ‘one for the future’.
“He has a terrific record, scoring in nine games out on nine. That is quite a feat.
He is the form player at the moment — but I wouldn’t swap them.”
United need Ronaldo, many times a flow in the big games, to hit form again in
tonight’s FA Cup clash of the giants.
That defeat to City, followed by Arsenal’s Monday night win against Blackburn, left
United five points adrift of Arsene Wenger’s team.
It could be that the Cup, and the Champions League, are now United’s best bets
for honours.
Ferguson certainly expects today’s game - his 100th FA Cup tie - to be a battle
royal between these 2 giants of the modern game.
“I think it will be a normal Manchester United-Arsenal game, one of great
commitment, feisty and competitive but filled with a lot of good football.
“Over the 21 years I’ve been here, the two clubs have been competing for the
trophies most of the time. So, fasten your seat belts.”
“We have the strongest squad for a while,” said Ferguson. “Louis Saha has
trained all week and is available.”
“I don’t regret anything. I think we have played some fantastic football. The
scoring rate has been good.
“Some of the games we have lost, we deserved more, like at Manchester City and
Bolton.
“Last Sunday we didn’t deserve to win. But the performance level has been good.
Obviously, you would like everyone to be fit every week, but you don’t get that.
And that’s been the situation with Louis Saha.
“We have missed him at important times but, if he stays fit until the end of the
season, he will be a big addition to us.
“It’s been very frustrating for Louis this past two or three years. He’s a fantastic
player who adds something different.
“I think Arsenal are maybe a more compact team now. When they had Thierry
Henry they looked upon him as the player.
“I don’t think they have that individual thing now. They are more solid. Adeb
-ayor’s height and physique gives them something different. Last season they
kept playing long balls to him and they beat us here in the last couple of minutes.
“Arsene Wenger has made the point that Adebayor, with his physique — and his
skill — has made a difference to them.
“We’ve seen big centre-forwards down the years, men whose main attribute was
heading the ball, for instance. But I think Adebayor has a lot more than that.”
Arsenal’s visit is United’s 12th consecutive tie against top-flight opposition.
The good news for United is that Ferguson’s teams have lost only 15 of their 99
ties, winning 67 and drawing 17. He has never lost in a semi-final and has won
five of his eight finals.
