Supposed United target Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has said he'd love to come to United

"I know certain English clubs are following me like Manchester United and Newcastle. They are both very interested in me," said Huntelaar.

"I love clubs with great history like Ajax. I also love United. It's a club that makes me dream, especially since Ruud van Nistelrooy has played there and did great things for them.

"It could be a source of inspiration as to how I continue my career. I follow the careers of van Nistelrooy and Dirk Kuyt, who play for massive foreign clubs, and they're role models for a young player like me."

UEFA European U-21 Championship 2006 player's profile

The star of a superb Netherlands squad, Huntelaar was unlucky not to win a place in Marco van Basten's party for the FIFA World Cup after enjoying a memorable season which saw him register a league-leading 33 goals and become the most expensive player ever to move between two Eredivisie clubs when AFC Ajax paid SC Heerenveen €9m for his services just before the turn of the year. He had been similarly impressive in qualifying for this championship, his ten goals marking him out as the leading scorer in Europe and moving him on to 14 goals in 17 U21 games - one away from the national record held jointly by Roy Makaay and Arnold Bruggink.

Huntelaar started his career at De Graafschap, before moving to PSV Eindhoven in 2000. He was unable to make the breakthrough at PSV, however, and spent the 2003/04 campaign on loan at second division side AGOVV Apeldooran, where he scored 26 league goals. He made a permanent move away from Eindhoven in summer 2004, signing a three-year contract with Heerenveen. Despite having previously played only ten matches in the Dutch top flight - comprising a solitary appearance for PSV and nine while on loan at De Graafschap in 2002/03 - Huntelaar proved an instant success at Heereveen, scoring 17 league goals in 2004/05 and carrying that form into this campaign.
