THE FA last night killed off the Premier League’s plan for a 39th match.

In an overwhelming verdict , football’s ruling body in this country said the
proposals from chief executive Richard Scudamore were simply not workable.

They told the League to come up with another propostion or, far more likely, drop
the idea altogether.

The FA Board ruled the prospect of clubs playing a 39th game in cities around the
world could wreck England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup if it damaged relations
with FIFA and UEFA.

They also fear it would cause fixture chaos.

FA chairman Lord Triesman said:

“At the moment, we have not seen a sustainable plan to which we can agree.

“If the Premier League has things it wants to say, about changes or new
variants, well then come forward.”

It is understood there was almost unanimous agreement among the board
members that the proposals could not be supported in their current form.

Triesman will travel to Zurich next Thursday with Scudamore to meet FIFA
president Sepp Blatter, who slammed the idea last week.

And League bosses insist they won’t abandon their plan for a year-long
consultation. A spokesman said:

“The issues raised – sanction, fixture calendar, sporting criteria and stakeholder
consultation – remain the ones we identified as being critical to the proposal.”

The FA chairman added:

“There are still a lot of fundamental issues. Firstly there are serious problems of
congestion in the season.

“Secondly, I think that we have to make sure that our international relationships
are in good shape. The 2018 World Cup is one of those reasons.

“Third, there is bound to be continuing concern about whether the 39th game
would change the symmetry of the competition or introduce unfairness. We’re in
a very difficult climate. People are very hostile.”
