TOTTENHAM star Robbie Keane last night claimed strike partner Dimitar Berbatov
is in the same class as Eric Cantona.
Self-confessed Liverpool fan Keane had to watch and suffer as Manchester United
legend Cantona beat his beloved Anfield heroes with his famous volley in the
1996 FA Cup Final at Wembley.
Both United and Chelsea were linked with transfer deadline moves for the brilliant
Bulgarian, who has been valued at around £35m by Tottenham.
Like Frenchman Cantona, Berbatov exudes an arrogance on the pitch, with a
supreme first touch and an uncanny ability to shrug off supposedly physical
opponents as if they were boys.
Keane said:
“Tall players are usually a target man but Berba has everything.
“He can go short, long, he holds it well, can see a pass and his assists are
unbelievable. His all-round game is a different class.
“To be mentioned in the breath of Cantona – phew! – is something, as he was
the best around. But Berba has that style of Cantona in the way he plays.”
“Berba’s contracted here and no-one wants him to leave.
“No-one wants your best players to go – it’s as simple as that, and he is one of
our best players.
“With Berba in the team we always have a chance of winning the game.
“If we keep progressing and doing well then not just Berbatov but all the players
will be desperate to stay and be a part of something happening.
“We complement each other with how we play and he’s the best partner up front
I’ve ever had.
“We read each other quite well. I don’t like talking about it. I prefer other people
to talk about it. But so far it has been going well.”
“Having Berba in your side is great because sometimes if the defenders get too
tight on him then it opens up space in behind where the ball can go.
“And if it doesn’t then great, because he can get the ball and hold it up until
tomorrow.”
